A similar case for Dead Rising was made by Capcom about Dead Rising 3. In both cases I believe them that they wouldn't have been made either way. Tomb Raider's sales are irrelevant(even though it did sell around 5m, right?)... it's a franchise that will be around forever. There will always be a new game made with or without outside support. For CD to claim it couldn't be made w/o MS stepping in is absurd.

The sense of entitlement online is shocking. First of all, the movies/games argument is the ultimate apples/oranges concept. Video games have simply never operated like records or CDs or DVDs or VHS. Not this year. Not 5 years ago. Not 20 years ago. Never. This is nothing new. Secondly, here's where the similarity is appropriate: buying an HD-DVD that plays one movie with Christian Bale wearing a rubber bar suit is no promise or guarantee that you'll be able to buy every other instance of Christian Bale wearing a rubber bat suit on the same format. When it comes down to it the studios don't owe us any home video releases at all, they do it because we pay them to.
If you bought Batman Begins on HD-DVD you can still play it. The Blu-ray police didn't show up at anyone's door to confiscate HD-DVDs and their players. They got what they paid for, kinda like how all the people who played Tomb Raider on PS4 should have no problem playing it again and again on PS4 until the console and/or disc dies or breaks down or whatever.
When Microsoft pays a developer to remotely patch an existing game into an unplayable state you'll have something to gripe about. Now? You got nothing.

Not at all. So quick to resort to dropping 'fanboy' nonsense too. Console exclusives are normal. Moneyhats to secure certain games/exclusive content is a given. Securing a seminal franchise like Tomb Raider that has always been multiplatform is treading new ground. It's worth complaining about, discussing or whatever.

Tomb Raider was a Sony console exclusive until the fourth game. The sixth entry was also a Sony console exclusive. This isn't a series that's always been available to all gamers on any platform of their choosing.

That said, I still think the game will just end up being a timed exclusive, whether it be for 6 months or for a year or something.

I don't think so. MS is the publisher now, just like Dead Rising 3. I don't think we'll see it on PS4, ever.
Also, we need a thread title change... Rise of the Tomb Raider.
The original Tomb Raider was on Saturn. Also the first few TR probably had little chance of making it to N64 anyway.

I don't think that's right. Pretty sure Square Enix is still the publisher. And the more I think about the business doublespeak they are using, the more I think it's timed.
It's really hard to figure how it makes any sense for them given that PS4 has a larger install base by about 2:1, is currently selling at 3:1, and moved more copies of TR Remastered by 2:1. Not to mention PC.

Money. Upfront. How is everyone not grasping this concept? They got paid. Guaranteed payday. That's how it makes sense. Repeating "But... but there are more PS4s in the world!" doesn't mean shit. Microsoft gave them an amount of money that made it worth their while. Period.

Well, that didn't take long.
Microsoft confirms Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity deal "has a duration"
Cross-gen too, in late 2015. Yuck.
Microsoft confirms Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity deal "has a duration"
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed to Eurogamer that Microsoft's controversial exclusivity deal for Rise of the Tomb Raider "has a duration".
However, he declined to confirm how long that duration is set for.
Last night, during its Gamescom press conference, Microsoft and Square Enix made the surprise announcement that Rise of the Tomb Raider would launch holiday 2015 exclusively on Xbox. That, Spencer confirmed, means Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Bunch of grown folks acting like children over this news is just so silly (not this thread, just the reaction in general). Especially if they're getting that guaranteed money for the game just being timed exclusive.
Until we live in a one platform environment, gamers are going to have to live with not being able to play everything.

at online petitions. I don't know about you guys, but I think this is a human rights issue. Let's petition the white house so we can get Obama to weigh in. It's the only way to stop the madness.

Nobody said this once, much less repeated it.
I'd bet on 6 months, and getting money up front from MS while also avoiding a head to head with Uncharted makes sense for everybody involved, even Sony to the extent that it can't hurt Uncharted sales.

Nintendo is fronting (a lot of) the bill on the sequel which would have never been made without Nintendo money. Not to mention the fact they are also adding in the original Bayonetta for free.
There is a pretty big difference between that and the Tomb Raider deal.
These exclusive deals have happened many times before between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Why is it such a big deal now?
