Re: The VR Thread (Oculus Rift, Vive, Playstation VR)

Best Buy has several PSVR games on sale this week. Just a heads up for anyone interested.

Yep, Gamestop has them in their ad this week, so they should be widely available in stores. Perfect timing for Resident Evil 7.

http://www.polygon.com/2017/2/1/1447...awsuit-verdict

Quote:
A Dallas, Texas jury today awarded half a billion dollars to ZeniMax after finding that Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey, and by extension Oculus, failed to comply with a non-disclosure agreement he signed.

In awarding ZeniMax $500 million, the jury also said that Oculus did not misappropriate trade secrets as contended by ZeniMax.

Of the $500 million, Oculus is paying out $200 million for breaking the NDA and $50 million for copyright infringement. Oculus and Luckey each have to pay $50 million for false designation. And Iribe has to pay $150 million for the same, final count.
http://www.polygon.com/2017/2/1/1447...lus-injunction

Quote:
Fresh off a half billion dollar award in its lawsuit against Oculus, ZeniMax tells Polygon that it may seek an injunction to temporarily stop the sale of Oculus Rift headsets.

“We will consider what further steps we need to take to ensure there will be no ongoing use of our misappropriated technology,” a ZeniMax spokesperson said, “including by seeking an injunction to restrain Oculus and Facebook from their ongoing use of computer code that the jury found infringed ZeniMax’s copyrights.”

That code formed the basis of the Oculus Rift’s software.
Even with Facebook's backing, that seems like a pretty big hit to one of the major players in the VR market.

Although the article is mainly about external HDD support, it also mentions that Playstation VR will be able to view 3-D Blu-rays with the next update.

I watched a bit of Ghostbusters (the new one) with the new beta update. It's pretty cool. The biggest downfall is that, although the picture quality for watching movies on PSVR is decent, it's still not great in general. It still has that screen-door effect going on, which is most prevalent in daylight scenes. I think I'm going to watch Dredd 3D tonight.

On another note, I guess this was added months ago, but I finally ran Hulu on my PSVR, and it has some pretty cool modes where you can watch content in a virtual living room, movie theatre, or beach. The only downside to the theatre option is that it curves the screen, which looks a little strange, but the feature is pretty sweet. Too bad it can't be used with other apps, or non-VR games, or with Blu-ray discs.

If you're curious about PSVR sales:

Quote:
It turns out Mr. House was too cautious. The headset, PlayStation VR, has been scarce in many stores, especially in Japan, since it went on sale in October. In an interview at his Silicon Valley office on Friday, Mr. House revealed PlayStation VR’s sales for the first time, saying consumers had purchased 915,000 of the headsets as of Feb. 19, roughly four months after it went on sale.

I looked around and didn't see anyone mention it, but did anyone play Rez Infinity for PSVR? The original Dreamcast Rez was brilliant, and so I am wanting to pick up PSVR almost just to try this.

Re: The VR Thread (Oculus Rift, Vive, Playstation VR)

https://www.polygon.com/2017/5/3/155...op-free-camera

Quote:
Select retailers are offering the PlayStation VR headset with the required PlayStation 4 Camera included for free, which is equivalent to a $59.99 price drop for the platform if you didn’t own any of the hardware before today. If you already had the camera, this news is unlikely to be exciting.

We’ve reached out to Sony to ask if this bundle is official, if it will be made available at other retailers and if it will be a permanent deal moving forward, and will update this post with any comment we receive.

The $399.99 bundle can be found at Amazon as well as GameStop, with GameStop noting that the deal is online only. The Amazon listing also includes a PlayStation VR demo disc, an included item that’s not mentioned in the GameStop bundle.
I wonder how VR has been doing lately, the hype seems to have died down considerably since the initial PS VR launch. The PC side has been filled with drama given the Oculus stuff and Palmer Luckey news.

Re: The VR Thread (Oculus Rift, Vive, Playstation VR)

With no killer titles to support VR, I'd say it's a lame duck right now. I'm surprised there haven't been more games or experiences on this system because it really is cool as hell. I'm hoping for an immersive Star Wars game or deep sea / mountain / sky diving type immersion app. I also think it'd be cool as hell to visit foreign countries as if you're really there... maybe some place you'd never get to like the pyramids in Egypt or Stonehenge.

I picked up Polybius, and it is simply stunning in VR. Almost overwhelming and easily one of my favorite VR experiences. I highly recommend it.

PlayStation VR for $340 on eBay via Newegg.

Sorry, not sure WTF is up with the huge thumbnail. I guess there is a different way to link to eBay?

Here you go:

For reasons unknown, DVDTalk defaults "Automatically embed media" as enabled. You have to "Go Advanced" to shut if off.

Downloaded Arizona Sunshine and very disappointed. First time I've had bad motion sickness, no problem with Farpoint. The gun was floating all over the place, the graphics bad even for a VR game and the running narration got old fast.

That's disappointing. I downloaded it yesterday and haven't had a chance to play it yet. The worst VR game for me as far as motion sickness was Robinson The Journey. I felt "off" for about an hour after taking off the headset on that one. Farpoint didn't really bother me either.

Re: The VR Thread (Oculus Rift, Vive, Playstation VR)

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/...99-with-touch/

Quote:
Oculus announced via its blog overnight that the Rift VR headset bundled with hand-tracking Touch controllers will now cost just $399, half the price the company was charging for that same hardware package less than five months ago. The "limited time" price is being offered as part of an ongoing "Summer of Rift" promotion that also includes heavy discounts on Oculus games.

It was only March 1 when the Rift headset alone saw its first major price drop to $499, after launching at $599 roughly a year before. At that time, the optional Oculus Touch controllers also dropped from $199 to $99, less than four months after their release last December.

Wow, that's a pretty big price drop / sale. I wonder if we'll see anything from Vive or PSVR.

Damn, I paid $600 for that bundle a couple months ago. It mostly collects dust.

Earlier today, Amazon was also throwing in a $100 gift card on top of the $399 Rift bundle as part of their Prime Day, but it looks like it's currently unavailable at the moment. Might want to keep a lookout though if it comes back in stock later today.
