Bungie - Destiny

Didn't see another thread about this yet, but looks like details about Bungie's new game for Activision is out today.

The big thing is that it requires an online connection and there's a persistent world, although they're not calling it an MMO and there's no subscription fee.

Joystiq - http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/17/de...-10-year-plan/

Kotaku - http://kotaku.com/5984648/everything...hooter-destiny

IGN - http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/...ope-and-dreams

From Kotaku:

The premise of Destiny is this: some mysterious entity has crippled civilization as we understand it. We don't know how, why, or even what it is.

You play as a Guardian, protector of the last safe city on Earth. What remains of society gathers for safety under a giant, hovering sphere known as Traveler, concept art of which we saw (leaked) as early as November. Your home is the tower in the city wall. When you're not fighting on the frontier, attempting to keep aliens and creatures at bay, or exploring the solar system to discover and reclaim lost items and secrets from humanity's Golden Age, this is where you'll wander and interact with other players.
From Joystiq:

Unlike its Halo franchise, Destiny does not focus on a single hero. Instead, Bungie has placed its attention on giving players the ability to create their own Guardian, outfitting him or her with different gear, weapons and abilities. Three classes were revealed during the event, each with their own looks and abilities. Bungie wouldn't detail plans for additional classes.

What Bungie would confirm, however, are some of the game's primary features. As a co-op-focused, persistent-world shooter, Destiny will require an internet connection to play on all platforms, whether you choose to play solo or with others. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg says that the "desire for connectivity is the only way to realize the vision of the game," and denied rumors of a subscription fee to play the game.

Sounds really cool. I have a feeling this'll be a next-gen game if they're going for ten years.

It sounds great, and since no developer has ever delivered less than what it has promised, that means it will be great when it's released!

I guarantee that there will be all kinds of purchasable in-game items, from cosmetic to game-breaking.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

I watched it three times on Xbox Live....I was really impressed with the scope and size. The entire concept is really huge. Liked the idea on not having a central figure but a collection of characters to build off of.

What little visuals they showcased were impressive. The question will be is will it lean more FPS or RPG or find a medium along like Mass Effect. Could this be the next Halo?

If it's like WoW and I don't have to actually interact with anyone if I don't want to, sounds great.

It seemed it would be perfect for the pc opting with far more customizations, number of players(?),etc...The idea really has some interesting possibilities especially if they envision this in a 10 year span. I can only imagine what this might be like 7-8 years down the road with the Nex Gen console probably strected as much as they can get out of it while the PC will just cruise along.

You know I was playing Halo last night and not once did I pause to think I needed more Home in my shooters.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

Sounds interesting, but despite all the hype there seems to be nothing substantial to get excited about. I respect Bungie for putting out a very polished FPS in Halo, but I don't really give them much weight when it comes to genre redefining innovation.

Yeah, they didn't actually revolutionize the FPS or multiplayer gaming. Especially on consoles where, at that time, most FPS were piss poor PC ports.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

Was in Best Buy picking up Crysis and they already have a full cardboard standee with pre-order cards on it.

We are one step away from pre-ordering games before they're even announced.
