Maybe we haven't figured it out yet, but how do the Amiibos work in Splatoon? We have the three pack and I've seen my daughter put it on the gamepad but I'm not sure if it's actually doing anything or not.

Keep an eye out for the vending machine lookin' thing (head right when you first drop into the lobby). You'll be prompted to scan an Amiibo, and that'll unlock a series of challenges. It's essentially the single player mode with limitations on what weapons and abilities you can use. Completing a challenge gets you more cash, and completing a row of challenges gets you gear that can't be acquired any other way. One cool thing is that the Amiibo unlock additional minigames you can play while waiting for a match to start.

Nintendo is finally doing the Nintendo Selects thing for the Wii U. Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, NES Remix, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze are first up. This is supposed to start on March 11th. Confirmed for Canada, but presumably it'll happen on our side of the border too. In Canada, they're $29.99 a pop which will presumably translate to $19.99 in the U.S.

So it's going to be about 5 minutes long?

I wonder when they are going to start talking about the NX. Are they waiting until E3?

Ha!

Figuring it'll also cover 3DS games, the Nintendo Select price drops, Amiibo, Virtual Console releases, indie stuff, and new content for games that are already out (like Nintendo-centric DLC for Minecraft), there is a lot they could potentially cover.

Being Nintendo and all, there's no telling. I can see them doing a tease or partial reveal a couple months before E3 but save the full unveiling for the big show.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I love Nintendo but they're sort of a frustrating company. The Wii U seems like mostly a flop of a console and in my opinion the Wii wasn't a lot better. They both have their core group of titles that we always come to expect but overall they're just lacking now days. I find myself going back to their older content more than anything. Hopefully the NX is better once its announced and out.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Both systems have had 20+ games I've thought were really good so that's more then enough for me to be happy with my system purchases.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Not that they don't have good games but I still find the libraries for both consoles lacking compared to competition. Nintendo is always good for their main lineup of games we've come to expect (Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, etc.) but they really need to branch out and get more third party support with the next console in my opinion. Also I wish they would actually make a current generation console that isn't outdated shortly after its out because of the next offering from Microsoft or Sony. I also hope the next system drops stupid gimmicks such as the Wiimote and the touch pad controller.

My Wii U drought was broken with the arrival of Twilight Princess + amiibo.

Did they remove all the waggle from Twilight Princess? I wouldn't mind giving it a second shot if they did.

Depends on how you look at it.

The remaster is based on the GameCube version, so there was never any waggle to remove. Also, things aren't "mirrored" the way they were on the Wii (Link was left-handed on the GameCube, but to reflect the way most people would hold a Wiimote, Nintendo flipped all the imagery so he'd be right-handed.)

I'm also pretty sure all Wii U games have to be playable with the gamepad so they would have had to have it without waggle as an option anyways.

Did they actually print more copies of Devil's Third? It's back in stock at Amazon. I think it was going for close to $100 at some point.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

My sons both want a Wii U (mainly for this Pokken game) .. I see that there is a bundle, but only in Japan. Looks like I'll be buying the Mario Kart 8 set and this game. At least it plays the wii games, right?

It does, although the implementation is kind of wonky. Unlike PS2->PS3 or GameCube->Wii, where you just plop in a disc and you're on your way, the Wii U requires you to reboot into a Wii mode. It's kind of annoying, but it definitely works!

Rumors of Nintendo ceasing production of the Wii U this year. Nintendo denies it.

The funny thing is it reads like:

Nikkei: Word is that Nintendo will cease production of the Wii U by the end of 2016.

Nintendo: What? They didn't get that from us. We're absolutely going to continue producing the Wii U next quarter. Maybe through the end of the year, even!

Nintendo has denied so many Nikkei articles that quickly proved to be true that their statement doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I'd bet they already have enough inventory to supply any sales for this year.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I could never get more than 10% through Twilight Princess due to the horrible graphics on the Wii and the controls. I may have to give that HD version a try since i hear it was a great game. Playing it with a gamepad is certainly preferable.

What the hell is an amiibo?
