It's also pretty obvious this game was built as a platform. It'll be around for many, many years.

Yeah, this is going to be like The Sims where they will be selling us DLC and expansion packs for years to come. Well, that's the plan anyway.

Yeah, and honestly, no matter how rough of a start, and how bad the user reviews are, this game will be a success in the end. I give it a couple months before everyone forgets about this horrible launch.

Yeah, D3 and Sim City will show us how long companies will keep their games up and running. I don't expect Blizzard to shut D3 down anytime soon. EA will probably wait until a sequel is released or the user base gets under a certain amount. Hell they closed the servers for LOTR Conquest a little more than a year after release.

How does that work on PCs nowadays? I haven't really played multiplayer online in a while, are all servers maintained by the company now or can you still use something like Gamespy and find servers hosting the game?

I doubt they would shut down the servers even if/when a sequel is released. Not that I don't dislike EA, I just don't think even they would be that stupid.

Yeah sure, but if there are still a decent number of people playing I can't see them taking it down even then, unless they add an offline ability by then. If there are people playing, there will be people buying in-game content, so they'll keep it up and running.

EA: No Digital Refunds for SimCity Players
Angry SimCity fans are grabbing their pitchforks and torches in response to Electronic Arts's decision to not provide digital refunds.
In a series of tweets via its official Origin account, EA announced on Thursday that ongoing server problems do not warrant refunds. "In general we do not offer refunds on digital download games," the company wrote, providing a link to its policy.

Re: SimCity (2013) (PC/Mac)
I contacted Amazon today, and they did state that I could send the game back for a full refund if I chose. Haven't decided yet.

This is becoming one of the biggest and most entertaining disasters I can remember in gaming in recent history.
Now EA is saying the problem was because people were having "too much fun" with the game, so they couldn't bring themselves to stop playing. That overloaded the servers and caused them to go down.

FORUM POST FROM KIP KATSARELIS, SENIOR PRODUCER, SIMCITY
You, the fans, are important to us. It's why we got into games and it's because of you that we here at Maxis were able to complete our dream of making another SimCity. This has been an exciting week for us, but as you know there have been some bumps along the way. We want to shed light on one of the most significant issues that we are facing right now, as well as the steps we're taking to resolve them so that we can provide you with an enjoyable experience.
Server capacity is our biggest obstacle. We launched in North America on Tuesday and our servers filled up within a matter of hours. What we saw was that players were having such a good time they didn't want to leave the game, which kept our servers packed and made it difficult for new players to join. We added more servers to accommodate the launch in Australia and Japan, and then more yesterday to accommodate the launch in Europe. As of right now, we are adding even more servers which will be going live over the next three days. And, our plan is to continue to bring more servers online until we have enough to meet the demand, increase player capacity and let more people through the gates and into the game.

EA got lube and fucked everyone in the ass who purchased the game?
TOLDJA!
I'm glad Amazon is refunding the game to people who purchased it. Especially since it's the most poorly reviewed item in Amazon's history.

Apparently a pirated version is out now that (obviously) doesn't require an internet connection to play.
Ironic that EA's anti-pirate measures are having the totally opposite effect.
How bad do customers feel that a pirate can play the game till the cows come home for $0, yet they spent $60 and can't play it at all?
