Re: Kickstarter: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

OK, so this is just to wrap my head around the project; where it started, and where we're at now.

Originally, the Kickstarter, with stretch goals proposed 12 videos, 10-20 minutes each, for around 2-4 hours of total content. According to the new update, Season 1 was 12 videos, at a total of 3 hours 40 min of content. So in terms of the amount of content, the Kickstarter has delivered.

It gets a little tricker when looking at the topics covered though. Originally, the 12 topics (1 video per topic) to be covered were:
  • Damsel in Distress
  • The Fighting F#@k Toy
  • The Sexy Sidekick
  • The Sexy Villainess
  • Background Decoration
  • Voodoo Priestess/Tribal Sorceress
  • Women as Reward
  • Mrs. Male Character
  • Unattractive Equals Evil
  • Man with Boobs
  • Positive Female Characters!
  • Top 10 Most Common Defenses of Sexism in Games

Of these topics, 5 have been explicitly covered, with 1 more mentioned in the update as still being on the way:
  • Damsel in Distress (3 videos)
  • Mrs. Male Character (1 video)
  • Background Decoration (2 videos)
  • Women as Reward (2 videos)
  • Positive Female Characters (2 videos, "Jade" and The Scythian")
  • Top 10 Most Common Defenses of Sexism in Games (on the way)

Of the remaining 6 topics not explicitly covered, it's unclear if some of them were incorporated into the other videos, or if the upcoming videos will address them in some way. Of the proposed titles for Season 2, only one seems to have a direct correlation to the original topics, i.e. "The Fighting F#@k Toy" = "Fighting and f***ing are different."

It seems doubtful that there's many people that pledge to see that explicit list of topics covered, and it's a bit unsurprising that an editorial series like this has revised the topics they're covering (or at least the titles of the topics) over time.

While I'm not Pro-GamerGate, I do find it highly disturbing that many notable Anti-GamerGate people (Not Anita, but people like Zoe Quinn, Brianna Wu, and Felicia Day) are supporting Sarah Nyberg.

Nyberg has a history of sharing child pornography and expressing sexual interest in children. The only reason the Anti-GG people are defending her is because she is also a prominent critic of GG.

This whole "male vs female butts in video games" thing reminds me of this:

It's not something you can really deny, the only defense you can try is that it somehow doesn't matter.

Yes, I watched all of it.

Some of her videos are more serious than others, but she has a great thing going on at her YouTube channel.

You got much further than me. I started watching this one because it's the shortest:

I only got 30 seconds in before her logic collapsed on itself and I stopped.

She says "feminism has already done everything it can in the western world," and likens it to people no longer needing polio vaccines. Which, at the least, is highly debatable. But then she suggests that her comparison with polio means that "feminism is a preventable disease." Which is completely wrong. In her comparison, sexism is the disease, and feminism is the vaccine. So she doesn't even understand her own logic.

I don't think that she even believes what she's saying. She just knows that a video with a cute girl saying she's not a feminist is going to get a shitload of views and ad revenue from the Gamergate crowd.

New episode on lingerie as armor.

I notice that she's not actively addressing the idiotic counterarguments that MRA types come up with.

Nice to see a bit more humor in her delivery, even if some of it is a little wooden.

Re: Kickstarter: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Well, this series has finally come to an end:
https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/27/...-says-goodbye/

The Youtube channel has expanded to include movie and video game reviews, profiles on "Ordinary Women". There's also some more blog-like posts, and a new FREQ Show.
https://www.youtube.com/user/feministfrequency/videos

It seems like, as the "controversy" around the show died down, so did a good deal of interest, at least in this thread. I haven't caught up on all the Tropes videos since I last checked the channel, but I feel they're still interesting and bring up points that are worth further thought, if nothing else.

Edit: It looks like the "Ordinary Women" series actually had a crowdfunding campaign itself:
https://www.seedandspark.com/fund/ordinary-women

What's interesting is that it got a lot less coverage, got a lot less backers than the "Tropes Vs Women in Video Games" Kickstarter, but raised more money.

Re: Kickstarter: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

I just wanted to look back at the project, and what was originally proposed vs what eventually was produced. I've paired the topic title with the season it was covered in, including a title change if it occurred.

The 12 topics originally proposed to be covered:
  • Damsel in Distress (S1)
  • The Fighting F#@k Toy (S2 "Lingerie is not Armor")
  • The Sexy Sidekick
  • The Sexy Villainess (S2 "Sinister Seductress")
  • Background Decoration (S1)
  • Voodoo Priestess/Tribal Sorceress
  • Women as Reward (S1)
  • Mrs. Male Character (S1)
  • Unattractive Equals Evil (S2 "Sinister Seductress")
  • Man with Boobs
  • Positive Female Characters! (S1)
  • Top 10 Most Common Defenses of Sexism in Games

Season 2 proposed episodes:
  • 'Strategic butt coverings' (S2)
  • 'Lingerie is not armour' (S2)
  • 'Escape the fashion runway'
  • 'One size does not fit all' (S2 All the Slender Ladies)
  • 'Fighting and f***ing are different'
  • 'Women combatants'
  • 'Not your exotic fantasy' (S2)
  • 'Gatekeeping cheerleaders'

Actual Episodes released:
  • Damsel in Distress (3 videos)
  • Mrs. Male Character (1 video)
  • Background Decoration (2 videos)
  • Women as Reward (2 videos)
  • Positive Female Characters (2 videos, "Jade" and The Scythian")
  • Strategic butt coverings
  • Body Language and the Male Gaze (Not a proposed episode)
  • Lingerie is not Armor
  • Are Women Too Hard To Animate? (Not a proposed episode)
  • All the Slender Ladies
  • Sinister Seductress
  • Not Your Exotic Fantasy

So, the original Kickstarter promised 12 topics, 12 videos total. The final tally is 12 topics covered, 17 videos total, not counting some bonus videos.

I feel like the topics changed over time as new topics emerged, and as some proposed topics turned out to be similar to others and were merged. For example, I believe "Are Women Too Hard To Animate?" emerged as a topic after Ubisoft cited cost/time/labor as a reason for not including female assassin characters in the multiplayer for Assassin's Creed Unity

Re: Kickstarter: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Great article about Sarkeesian standing up to her trolls in person.

Anita Sarkeesian's astounding 'garbage human' moment
Feminist speaker hits back at trolls and haters

"If you Google my name on YouTube you get shitheads like this dude who are making these dumb-assed videos," she says. "They just say the same shit over and over again. I hate to give you attention because you're a garbage human. These dudes just making endless videos that go after every feminist over and over again is a part of the issue of why we have to have these conversations."
You go girl!

Re: Kickstarter: Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

Seriously. It was a coordinated effort among a dozen or more fucking loser shit lords to intimidate her. They fucking outright admitted as much in their shitty post-VidCon vlogs about it. And Carl of Swindon has always been aware of how toxic his manchild audience is.

Fuck that fucking loser and anyone who defends his shit. Dude can't even get simple facts right in any of his videos, either, but his fans eat that shit up.

Anyone with half a brain can see how disingenuous his "She harassed me by calling me a name once!" bullshit is. Dude has spent YEARS obsessing over and misrepresenting her work.

An in-depth article on what women in gaming development or criticism have to put up with. Sarkeesian is interviewed, among other 11 females.

Heads up, "female" is an adjective and people don't like being called by an adjective, even if it describes them. Try a noun next time.

Female is actually both a adjective and also a noun.

It's also sort of clinical, and doesn't imply youth or inexperience like "girl," or maturity like "woman."

Of course, it also makes the person who uses it as a noun sound like a rapper or a Ferenghi.

I think we should using "dudes" and "chicks" in place of "men" and "women."
