If you're interested in the steelbook but don't want to pre-order, you could always put down your money at BB now, take your steelbook home, and then at sometime in the future cancel your pre-order and get your deposit back. They probably won't ask for the steelbook back, or at least with Disney BD steelbooks I haven't heard of anyone having to give back their steelbook when cancelling their pre-orders.

Is it necessary to play the first game? I tried and couldn't get into it but want to give the series another shot.

No, I don't think it's necessary. The second game feels more like a reboot than a sequel. They changed the lead character (in the part of the game that matters), and made 3 straight games about him.

AC2 and AC:B are essential. AC:R may not be depending how how it plays out. AC1 is optional, but I still feel you should at least know the story and the modern-day conspiracy stuff they pepper in. YouTube and wiki it all at least.

AC1 sets the foundation and establishes the important concepts of the entire series. I'd highly recommend not skipping it, personally.

The openning narration of AC2 completely summarizes all the important bits of information (characters, setting, technology, etc.) from AC1. You don't need to play AC1 at all to get into the series.

As much as the games were rehashes of similar locations, missions, weapons and abilities that got annoying at times I can't see missing out on any of the games since the story is so damn good.

If there was ever a sure thing in my life, Assassin's Creed 3 is it. I don't need to see any more until I fire it up.
Though, I'm not really a fan of that voice over actor so far. Sounds way too modern or something. Bored? I don't know. It just isn't nearly as interesting as Altair or Ezio.

I was almost done with AC:R when Mass Effect 3 came out and I haven't yet gone back, but I'm going to now, and if there's a sweet pre-order out there (e.g. newegg's $47.99) I'm jumping all over this one. I'm glad they're mixing it up.
P.S. I would personally skip AC:1, if only because the climbing mechanics/controls were so improved by AC2.

Well ok Ocarina of Time was a stretch but for some reason the landscape just doesn't look sharp to me. Maybe it's my eyes or something.

A better comparison would be to compare the wilderness of AC3 to Ocarina's Hyrule field.
Hyrule field was very sparsely populated both in terms of critters running around and things like trees, it also and had a very low texture quality, polygons, and shadows, etc compared to today's games. Anyone that thinks AC3 looks like an N64 game quite simply doesn't remember what N64 games actually looked like.

Hmm, the hunting side quest reminds me of Red Dead Redemption. Hopefully they don't make you sit through the same fucking animation and hear the same lines over and over again.

Haven't been following this game at all.
Those videos look awesome - I can't wait. Did I see that right? You get to run around an open battlefield!?? That is so sweet.
The graphics are just okay. At this point the consoles are really holding everything back. Developers have done about all they can do. There is nothing here that is really more impressive than what was happening in GTAIV almost 4 years ago now, or Red Dead Redemption for easier comparison. It's just little effects they add or AI improvements that allow for all these characters on screen (with reduced model detail as well, I'm sure).
I just started playing AC:R on my PC and was shocked how low res the textures are and the low level of geometry in the worlds.
The games are still attractive and fun, but compared to what is possible these days it is really out-dated.
Still looking forward to this one, and I hope us PC users at least get some graphical niceties, although I won't count on it.

Ambushing those Redcoats and taking out the guy in the fort looked outstanding. Working my way through Brotherhood right now with Revalations on deck but I'd rather be playing this.

Released a special trailer or July 4th. No real action but it's appropiate for the day....
