Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, 360, PS3)
I figure I would start a thread for this game since I have a few friends that work there and told me the demo came out today
It's made by Big Huge Games/38 Studios (Curt Schilling's company). I still think its a terrible title, but the game looks interesting.360 Demo - http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Pr...983?noSplash=1 PC Demo is out on Steam and EA's Origin as well. Video Preview:

I've been keeping an eye on this one. Great to hear there's a demo out. I'll check tonight to see if it's on PSN. If not, I'll have to give it a try on PC.

Glad to see a demo out as well. Really interested to see how it plays. Love the people tied to the game (R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and Ken Rolston), so I expect this one to be a great game. We shall see how it delivers. If I can pull myself away from Skyrim, I'll download the demo this week.

One thing that stood out to me was a recent IGN article which said the combat was way better than Skryim. That's not exactly saying too much but it's a good sign.

Doesn't look to be on PSN yet. I have it downloading through Steam. Can't wait to give it a try.

Downloading it now from origin. It looks like an mmo judging from the game play videos. As it turns out they'll be releasing an mmo based on Amalur sometime down the road.
It's pretty cool R.A. Salvatore created the game universe and lore. |

the opening dungeon was blah....but once you get outside the real charm of the game starts...I was actually surprised how good the game looks..minor late texture work aside...
This might be one hell of a game....to bad no one is doing ANY sort of pre-order coupon....

You also get several unlocks for Mass Effect 3 by playing (and completing) the demo. Similarly, the Mass Effect 3 demo will unlock some bonus items for use in this game.
I enjoyed the demo quite a bit, even if it does look and feel like a game from about 5 years ago. It's very Fable-ish with some Dragon Age elements thrown in. |

I enjoyed the demo. The deciding factor for me will be how deep the item/creation/alchemy system is.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, 360, PS3)
I couldn't remap my movement keys which pissed me off from the get go. The graphics make Wow look like Skyrim. But they are pretty. I was disappointed in the "expansive world", which is just a series of areas linked by narrow paths. I wish I could control the camera. In combat it widens way out and if your trying to run and avoid fighting you get some wonky camera angles.
As an MMO I expect it to go F2P soon. |

Did you play on a console? On PC you can move the camera around all you want and zoom in and out. I do wish it had an option to use a 360 controller on PC.
I agree about the paths. It takes you out of the world a bit; especially the invisible walls. |

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, 360, PS3)
I would link Wikapedia, but that is not happening today
. But R.A. Salvatore wrote primarily for the Forgotten Realms books and created the infamous character Drizzt Do'Urden, one of the most beloved fantasy characters in the D&D universe. He's done some excellent stuff on his own. Not my favorite author, but I would put him in my top 5. Haven't played the demo, but perhaps they did the walls on purpose for the sake of the demo. They didn't want to crash the demo, so they put some restrictions on it and there you go. Just a thought, I could be completely wrong though.

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, 360, PS3)
That'd be nice but it's the game design. There are definite boarders you have to stay in. And there's no jump button; that alone limits where you can get to. It seems very similar to WoW in its layout.

Yeah, this is just an action RPG. There's an MMO coming later on from 38 Studios in the same universe.

I'm hearing that this is more similar to, say, Fable, than it is to an Elder Scroll game. True?

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, 360, PS3)
It has clear ties to both series. The world layout and fighting is much more similar to Fable. But it also has deeper RPG elements like blacksmithing, alchemy, enchanting, and an involved level up system like a TES game. It'll be interesting to see how the whole game is. I'm hoping the RPG elements shine, rather than the hack and slash elements.

Yes...in fact the only thing I can see that would make you even put Skyrim and Amalur in the same sentence would be game length and fantasy setting..

and I did not think about this...and I did not spend a lot of time on this part of the game...

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, 360, PS3)
Also I liked the Fable games..esp Fable 2...but I am the first to admit the combat in those games do tend to be more button mashing and mindless....this game looks to have a MUCH more satisfying combat system.

As long as you're clear this isn't the MMO.
