Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

Comes out Aug 27th, 2010. This game was on my radar a bit, and I played the demo.

Slop101 says
Quote:
Just played the Mafia 2 demo and I'm kinda impressed.

The game play was more than solid, as were the graphics and voice acting. And just as impressive was the great re-creation of early '50s New York. I'm still gonna wait for the reviews, but now I'm interested whereas before, I hadn't considered getting it at all.
What version did you play on???ps3 or xbox? I found the graphics on the 360 to be horrible. Up close they were ok I guess, but anything past 20 feet was a mess. I know the systems are starting to show their age, but it looks like something from 3-4 years ago. I did not like the color of the game either.

I guess the demo was alright, but I am not sold on the controls. It looks like the cover system is going to be important, which will probably make open world fighting, especially against cops, difficult since they will come at you from all sides.

I will wait on this bad boy...

I'm interested in it but I don't know if it can top The Godfather. I know a lot of people weren't high on GF but I loved it.

surprised to see the playboy pictures in the demo though....I know sex sales, but full screen decent quality pictures of classic playmates was a nice touch...especially when you see the quality of the work compared to all the crap stuff on the net these days...

I loved Godfather 1 and 2. I really felt the second game was overlooked. The only thing that game was missing was a difficulty setting, since it was way to easy.

I played the demo on the 360 and may pick it up down the road, but can't see myself buying it before a price drop. I wasn't a fan of how the car handles while driving.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

The between missions stuff (driving from A-to-B) seemed uneventful. I shot a cop, stole his car, stopped by a bar and got plastered, then did some drunk driving in the police car until time ran out. Nobody was chasing or shooting at me. What's a guy gotta do to get some action in this town?

Did the on-foot stuff give anyone else a headache? It might have been the camera or maybe I was just tired. But for some reason, my head was hurting by the end of the demo.

I felt the same way, it seemed to close in. I tried pulling out, but the camera would only go overhead.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

I played the demo on 360 last night and was really surprised by the amount of aliasing that was present. There were also a few instances where the camera got too close indoors and caused problems. Other than that, I liked it overall. The music was good (both the original and classics that were playing), the city environment wasn't bad and the gunplay was decent enough, albeit on the easy side. I'll have to wait for a sale though, too much in the backlog.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

I think, at worst, I chastised him. No yelling was involved; not even one exclamation mark was used. I probably won't get this, but there is a Kmart deal with a $20 coupon that would make it pretty reasonable for a new release.

Looks like the PS3 has some significant extra content as an exclusive. This seems to be a new wrinkle in the console wars. Don't know if that would push me to the PS3 instead of the 360 version. Is there multiplayer in this game?

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

So I dl the demo on pc...ran it full specs everything high , 16x and AA on...it pushed over 100 fps average....

The game looks much better on pc. I know it should, but when I compare this to say Just Cause 2 pc vs ps3/xbox there is something wrong here. Just Cause 2 is a better looking game...and on the computer it looks great at max settings, obviously better than the 360 version, but it is not shockingly better. The 360 version still looks great, and on a big tv from my bed there is not enough difference to make the pc a must have.

Mafia 2 is an average looking game on pc, but the 360 version is a mess.

The xbox version of Just Cause 2 is to me about 80% as good as the pc version at max settings..

The xbox version of Mafia 2 is less than 50% as good as the pc version. When you consider the fact that Mafia 2 is not an amazing game to start with...what happened??? Maybe I am making to big a deal out of this, but it just screams laziness on their part when it comes the 360 port.

Slop needs a good yelling from time to time...

As for MP, last I checked there was none. Decker I think you were on the fence with Just Cause 2 pc vs ps3/xbox...not sure what your ultimate choice was, but unless the ps3 version looks better this is really a pc purchase for me. That is saying a lot, because I have always picked xbox/ps3 over pc for games, even when the pc version is better...(dragon age, just cause 2 ect.)

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

so I played the 360 version again...maybe I was a little hard on it. The graphics of cars, and your character, and inside are not bad. Some of it is actually good...the problem seem to be with the way they handled the aa....anything past 30 feet that has natural movement (like the trees) seems to be almost removed from the game, and have this weird fuzzy look that almost makes me sick... It is if the trees are from a different game, and when you move the screen fucks up. I read one guy said that there was a problem with the demo that was fixed in the finished product, so we will see...

I played this on my sons 32 inch lcd tv and it actually is a lot better looking...on the 60 inch in my room, especially since I am so close to it, it looks like garbage.

As it turns out, (my webmaster is working with the powers to be) I might be reviewing this one when it comes out on August 27th (it would be the first time on our site in years has actually gotten a game to review, so I'm not holding my breath). I'm afraid I don't know too much about the series, is it like GTA or Godfather? Anything I need to know before going into it? *fingers crossed on this one*

I just finished playing this on the PS3 and was surprised on how much I liked it. Still, I'm not going to purchase it until it gets a price drop.

That was the first game I ever picked PC over 360 and am so glad I did. It looks WAY better, IMO. I contol it with the 360 wireless controller, so there's no difference there (I don't think it would have been as well suited for mouse and keyboard). It also was priced $10 less. It was tied to a Steam account, thankfully. I've played the hell out of that game.

I might consider the PC version for Mafia as well, I guess. Some of the decision will have to be related to the excusive PS3 content. Here's what I found:

Mafia II’s PS3-Exclusive DLC: The Betrayal of Jimmy
Posted by Jeff Rubenstein // Social Media Manager
Last month, the name “Jimmy’s Vendetta” leaked out, along with a list of PlayStation 3 Trophies that appeared to be from the previously-confirmed PS3-exclusive Mafia II downloadable content.

As it turns out, that DLC will be coming down the line. Before Jimmy can get going on that vendetta – he’s got to be double-crossed. That, as it turns out, is the source material for The Betrayal of Jimmy DLC, available at free at launch, exclusively for the PS3 version of Mafia II.

The Betrayal of Jimmy is almost an arcade-style take on the Mafia II experience. The team took the most fun elements from the game: shooting, driving, stealing, etc in a open world, and made it a point-based romp, complete with leaderboards. It’s all about fast cars, blowing stuff up, hitting top speeds, and really taking advantage of the open city. If Mafia II is an expansive story, then The Betrayal of Jimmy is instant gratification.

Unlike in the main Mafia II storyline, you’ll rack up points for drifting, high speed driving, headshots, kill combos and more. Points pop up right on the screen, arcade style and giant, flashy icons like arrows point at targets – something you’d never see in the more authentically 1940s and 50s setting from the primary game mode.

That’s not to say it’s all run and gun – there’s some story to give the mode substance to bring it together. 2K included new cut-scenes and voice acting to keep production quality consistent from the main game.

About that story… Jimmy’s a lot different than Vito, the protagonist in the main game’s plot. While Vito is more of a Henry Hill-esque character – a good guy that gets drawn into becoming a goodfella, Jimmy’s been getting his hands dirty for a long time. With a shaved head, all-black attire, and dark shades, Jimmy’s the kind of guy who you’d cross the street to avoid.

When Jimmy gets screwed over and doesn’t know what’s going on, he starts taking on missions from different crime families to try to uncover the truth. You’ll see some new families here, but some of the characters cross over the storylines, including the main character – the city of Empire Bay.

While you can download The Betrayal of Jimmy on August 24th, the day Mafia II hits shelves, you’ll definitely wanna play through the main storyline first. There’s not a lot of exposition in this content pack; you’re immediately dropped into a gunfight where you’re outgunned and outflanked. Unlike Vito’s slow introduction to the world of organized crime in the main game, Jimmy’s already “leveled up” and spawns initially with multiple weapons. The whole city is open to you right at the start.

Now I tried to anticipate a few questions you Blog readers would come up with when we visited 2K this week to see the game in action:

The Betrayal of Jimmy is not included on the disc – new copies of the game will contain a voucher to download it. If you pick the game up used, you’ll be able to purchase the DLC for $9.99.
While you can unlock Trophies during The Betrayal of Jimmy (we saw one earned during our playthrough for getting significant airtime in a car), there aren’t any mission-specific Trophies for this DLC.
The Jimmy’s Vendetta DLC will become available post-launch. No word on price.
With over 25 different missions, The Betrayal of Jimmy promises a meaty additional gameplay experience, and a nice bonus for PlayStation 3 owners looking to pick up Mafia II later this month

That's a pretty huge PS3-exclusive bonus and might tilt me more in that direction even over better PC graphics. I guess I'll have to DL the demos and compare.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

I just finished playing through the demo a couple times (had to find all 5 Playboy's) even though it was the same demo on the show floor at E3. I wasn't even looking at Mafia II, but enjoyed the demo more than I expected, and now going through it again I'm really looking forward to this.

I'll still pick this up on 360, although the DLC for PS3 is tempting.

Yeah, 360 for me as well. I'm sure it'll be DLC for the 360 eventually.

Hey at least it's not like GTA IV. I fired my gun once inside my apartment and a cop walks in 30 seconds later. What a budget for Liberty City!

Demo was alot of fun, loved the music, visuals. Driving was alot of fun, police chases through the 8 minutes you could drive around was alot of fun, like how the controls are. Much better then GTA4.

Gonna buy this game

My friend and I have been waiting months for this game. I was a bit disappointed with the demo. The choppy framerate gave me a headache and the controls in-doors could have used more polish.

I'm hoping this demo was a real early build of the game, if not this will be the biggest game disappointment for me since...well, The Godfather II

The controls feel pretty soft but I got enough of a kick out of driving around in a T-bird look-alike while listening to classic tunes that I'll grab this after a hefty price drop.

I really hope this game has an option to pull back the camera, because it annoyed the shit outta me. I liked the demo but very clunky controls...
