Guitar Hero 5 not playing on PS2. Solutions?

Just got Guitar Hero 5 for PS2 and it doesn't play. "Disc read error." I put some old games in and they work just fine. The PS2 has been used off and on the past year for some old Final Fantasy games.

Is this a problem with an old PS2 player and a new game, or is there something I can do before I try and take the game back?

If it's a "fat" PS2, that's likely your problem. A lot of dual-layered games had problems being read. A new slimline one should solve your problem.

I was shocked ta find they still made PS2 games as well! We have Rockband/Beatles rockband and all the instruments for 360, but no Guitar Hero guitars. Then I saw a PS2 copy in the store for 29.99 and I remembered we had those crappy red and black Gibson SGs from GH1 and 2, so I thought I'd try it. I gotta play "Do You Feel Like We Do" on expert...one of my fav solos of all time.

Dangit, yes...it's a fat PS2. Not gonna buy a slim one, may grab a PS3 when the new F1 game comes out, so maybe I'll try and take it back and get it for 360 for now.

Another site mentioned a firmware upgrade from Sony for like $40. Sounds odd tho...

There's still a lot unannounced for the RB3 setlist so GH5 may be a moot point.

Try cracking the machine open and wiping the lens that reads the discs with a scratch-free cloth. That fixed my launch PS2 when it was having problems reading discs, and it works fine now.

You should probably just destroy the disc. It would be for the best.
