Have you ever bought a second video game console to keep as a spare?
Have you ever bought a second video game console to keep as a spare? To be clear, I don't mean a second console to replace a dead console, but one to keep as a future replacement for a console that was still working without any problems.

Yep, I still have an unopened PS2 slim that I bought just in case. Probably should have done the same with the PS3, but oh well.

No, but I did buy a new version of the console and keep the older version...

No, never saw a need. All my consoles going back to the Coleco Telstar and Atari 2600 are still working. I've only had to replace one, the launch-day PS3.

I have two PS3s, but only because my fat died. Now the slim is giving me the dreaded 80010514 disc read error with some titles.

After having both a NES and SNES have problems and having to replace them with dirty used models bought at GameStop, I decided to buy an extra N64 when TRU was clearancing them out at $50. It might have even came with a copy of Hey You Pikachu if I remember correctly

No.
For a while, my wife and I had duplicates when we moved in together, but we downsized them eventually.
The only time I could think of doing it was like PerryD said when you find something on clearance like that.

Yeah, no.
Had to replace a few (PS3 Fatty, a half dozen 360s and a Wii). Every other console dating back to the Atari days stood the test of time.

If you haven't noticed, all but the N64 are disc-based systems. After the spindle on my PS broke, I decided to get a back-up for my systems going forward.

I would but most are in storage now. I only have my 360 and X1 hooked up. No room for anything else. At least, going forward, I won't have to buy back-ups for MS consoles since they're all supposed to be BC now.

I have doubles of all of them, that way I can use one and get it scratched up and it's ok because I have one in storage. But I also have triples of the Xbox 360, and triples of the Intellivision. Triples is best.

I don’t want to jinx myself, but I’ve only ever had one system go bad while it was still being used, which was Wii thanks to my wife playing Wii Fit a long time, so I don’t see a need. I have most of the mainstream systems from Sega, Nintendo, XBox, Sony except Saturn (I got pissed at Sega d/t Sega CD being pretty unsupported) and Wii U (it just seemed pointless) since the SNES/Genesis generation, and no issues other than that.

Never have done this. All of my consoles I’ve owned have stayed working. Granted I haven’t checked some of the older ones in years but they lasted a long time when I had them out.
Only console to ever die on me was my first 360 which got the RROD. Replaced it with a 360 Elite.

Re: Have you ever bought a second video game console to keep as a spare?
No. I've upgraded all of my consoles prior to one failing on me, so I never saw the need to have a second one. Even if one did fail, I'd just buy a new one at that time. Once a new gen comes out, and has been out for a year or two, I upgrade and sell the old console. I have very little interest in replaying games, and there's always new stuff to distract me from the things I never got around to on a previous console. With backward compatibility becoming more commonplace, I have gone back to previous generations of games, but not with any regularity.
