If I don't like Gears of War, should I skip Army of Two?
I've been trying to complete the original Gears of War with a friend through co-op. He likes the game quite a bit, while I find it to be painful to slog through.
I'm thinking of just finishing the campaign on single player (have Acts 4 and 5 to go) and selling the game off. I do like co-op games though and a local store had a copy of Army of Two for cheap. I've heard good and bad about it. The one thing that I saw in it that I hated in Gears of War is the controls didn't look as clunky. I found myself fighting Gears' controls more than anything. Is it worth picking up, or will I probably dislike it as much as Gears?

Re: If I don't like Gears of War, should I skip Army of Two?
I despised Gears of War. The controls, the lack of implied story. I sold it off the very second that I beat it. To that end, I've heard that Gears of War 2 fixed all the issues. I have yet to test it out, however.
Moreso to your question, I've played Army of Two and while it controled fine, I was utterly bored with it (save for the utterly bromantic expressions between the two guys. "you're the best." "no, YOU'RE the best!") While I fought the controls and the story in Gears, I guess ultimately I'd rather play that or try Gears 2 before going back to Army of Two. |

I loved Gears of War...spent many, many hours on it.
I thought Army of Two was very mediocre and not worth even playing. The demo on the marketplace should give you a good idea whether it grabs you or not. But Gears of War 2 is by far the biggest next gen disappointment for me...I have never seen a franchise take such a nosedive. Epic took a great game and made it much worse. |

Army of Two was average, only made fun by playing co-op. If you didn't like Gears, you probably won't like Army of Two.

I liked both but only for their co-op campaigns. If you have a buddy, Army Of Two is a quick, sometimes fun shooter to enjoy. The controls don't seem quite as sluggish in AOT compared to GOW but AOT lacks the polish that GOW has.
If you can get it cheap and have a co-op buddy, I would at least give it a whirl.

I don't get the hate for Gears, as I loved it and had no problem with the controls. The sequel wasn't bad by any stretch, but it really was just more of the same. In no particular order, the 360 co-op games I've enjoyed most would be Gears 1 & 2, Crackdown, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil 5 and Halo 3 & ODST. Oh, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, though that's a different style of gameplay. Army of Two and Kane & Lynch were pretty lousy and boring.

I go back to the comparison I made earlier to slavery. Slavery existed because it was commercially viable and there were those that justified it using circular logic (i.e. slavery was OK because people wanted to keep slaves). It was only when men of moral character started standing up to the slave traders/owners that the wheels were set in motion for the abolition of slavery. I draw a parallel to straight porn. - art |

Re: If I don't like Gears of War, should I skip Army of Two?
Unfortunately, there aren't many choices available for those who like (offline) split-screen co-op. I was looking for "Army of Two" a few months ago and coudn't find it. I ended up getting "Resistance" (the 1st one) and it's pretty good in co-op mode. It kindda pisses me off that so few games have that option.
