Maybe it's due to the characters being polygonal instead of 2-D sprites, and like I said, it doesn't control poorly, but it's just kind of a bummer that it doesn't control as well as a 20 year old game.
Just from watching the gameplay videos I could tell that the controls would be more loose, unless the people playing those videos were drunk.

Yeah the videos gave me a Super Mario 2 vibe. Great game, but I thought the controls were pretty 'floaty' in that one.

I just picked this up, today. Excellent game. Very fun. World 1 is fairly easy, but, getting into World 2, and wow! I don't want to rush through this game, because I really want to enjoy it, but, man is it addictive!

Just picked this up....I haven't really touched my Wii lately, so hopefully this will give me a reason.

So is it just me or are warp pipes/canons totally pointless in a world with save games?

Pretty much. If Wii had trophies/accomplishments like PS3/Xbox, then I could see some use. [Beat the game in "x" boards or whatever.] As it is, they're kind of useless.

I've spent pretty much all my free time this past week playing this and am pretty much done with it - only missing a few of the star coins in world 9. I've had an absolute blast and am sad to see it coming to an end. [That said, these last few coins have proven to be an absolute monster to get.]

On World 3 I cant move up on the map to the last castle. I completed the levels but the path still wont open up. What do i need to do to reach that part?

I'm halfway through World 3. It's a great game, but it's no Galaxy. I couldn't put that game down and that includes starting over and getting halfway through the game a second time with Luigi. With this I can do a handful of levels and I'm good.

I spent this morning completing all the Star Coins in World 1 and most of 2. It's a tad ironic that it takes some skill to acquire most of them and yet collecting them unlocks 'hint' videos. Quite the conundrum. People that can get the coins don't need the hints, and those that do can't get the coins.

Does anyone know if getting every single one in the game does anything special?

Yup, thats how I feel, I don't take it as a negative though, It just reminds of the how it used to be, pick it up for about a hour...run through a few levels, and then go do something else. Its not really a time sink.

ALTHOUGH, this game is pretty hard, I am using up continues like no tomorrow, I have killed/been killed by my wife many times lol, and if you don't keep, you will die if you fall to far outside of the screen.

That's why I started a separate save for multiplayer. On the single player game I'm only through half of World 3 and have about 50 lives.

Of course, I've only played MP with my 5 year old so there is lots of dying and continuing. It's fun though. Also nice that you can pick up the other player and run through the level if need be.

I played a few levels with my wife and we enjoyed it. Seems pretty fun. I did NOT use the nunchuck...how is everyone else playing this game?

I switched to the nunchuck combo. It took some time getting used to controlling a 2D Mario with the analog though. I just can't take how small the Wiimote is turned on its side(incl. buttons & D-pad).

That worked..but then you would accidently let go of the '1' button and send them to their deaths lol.

I've only tried it with the sideways Wii-mote - I hate using the nunchuck, especially trying to get any sort of accuracy.

Spoiler:
Getting all of them on each level unlocks a new board on World 9, available after finishing World 8. Not sure if you get any bonus for getting all of the coins in World 9, but each board you get them all on appears to add a star icon on your save panel...so the satisfaction of a job well done, then.

Just finished the final Bowser battle. That was quite an ending. This was the most fun I've had not just playing the Wii but gaming in general. But this is certainly not my favorite 2D Mario game. Mario 3 is still the best.

I heart this game. SO much fun, albeit it can be frustrating sometimes.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii thread of old school gaming goodness

Yes, I love this game so much. I'm still playing it almost every day. I'm up to the start of world 7 and I have found all of the stars in worlds 1-4 so far.

That said, this game did almost cause bad times for me. I've played this game so much, and it has me so addicted to Mario games right now that I went back to the DS NSMB to try for all of those stars as well. So there I was, playing my DS, and all of a sudden, out of habit, I started shaking my DSi to pick something up and fly in the air, and I darn near destroyed the hinges on the system.

I just started playing this game. Having a blast so far. It took me a few turns to get the hang of the shaking controls, but now its second nature and feels natural.

What do you get when you get the 3 big stars per level? Extra one ups? What..and How many continues do you get? I've already used 17 through 3 world levels.

When you collect all stars in a world it opens up a hidden level in world 9. I think there's one hidden level for each world You only get world 9 once you finish the game.

If you need help finding the stars use this guide :
