My brother had done it before so he helped me. It basically just involved taking the heat-sinks off the two processors, cleaning off all the crappy old compound (which had melted and spread around the circuit board), and replacing it with Arctic Silver. After that we turned it on for a few seconds without the fans plugged in so the chips would heat up and form a bond with the new compound and re-assembled. Worked like a charm.

I'm pretty sure that what caused the RR was the old thermal compound spreading out and covering other circuits causing them to short.

Yup, got the RRoD the other night. What really pissed me off is about an hour after getting the RRoD, I got a Blue Screen of Death on my laptop, resulting in what I called the PMoD-Purple Microsoft of Death.

A few questions for the RRoD veterans:

Why console will RRoD after freezing for a while, but if I leave it off for a few minutes, it will boot up to the dashboard, only to freeze up and RRoD again. Will Microsoft turn it on, see the dashboard and assume it works? Do I need to send this puppy into the land of no return before I send it back?

Also, I am a freak about things being new and neat...has anyone gotten back a dirty, dinged-up 360 in place of their previous console?

One of the consoles I got back was yellow stained and the grill on the bottom was shattered like someone took a hammer to it. They wouldn't replace it for either reason, I just had to wait it out until I got the RROD again. Fortunately that system only lasted a few months.

I'm on my 5th and it's been faulty for a bit with read errors, but I'm not paying to replace it. All I need to do is put a game onto the HDD and then it works fine.

I would still be on my first, but I wanted to switch everything over to HDMI, and got a deal on a 60GB for $100 when my dad bought a new TV using my BBRZ card...so I kicked in the $100 and grabbed an HDMI Jasper. Mine was a September 2006 build, was pretty quiet and completely reliable. Still have to sell it...it's just sitting in the box right now.

Still my first one bought sometime in 2006 (beginning of the year, not sure)... Got the RROD last year but been pretty good since getting it back. Contemplating getting a new one for a bigger hard-drive and HDMI because I recently moved it into the living room and would like to clean the wires up.

I bought mine on release day (short line at Costco) and other than recently having to replace a drive belt on the DVD drive, still working for me.

Mind you, I pretty much stopped playing it around May of 2006 which is when I started playing Guild Wars. Other than my baby girl turning it on and off all the time since she started crawling about a year ago, it's been pretty much ignored until I picked up Rock Band 2 a couple weeks ago.
