Help - PS3 not playing BR movies anymore.

It got buried in the main thread so I thought I'd try a thread out here

I've watched countless BRs without issue, and just recently it stopped displaying the BR entry under Video. Tried 3-4 discs, including one I had watched before without issue, none showed. Then all of a sudden it started showing the entry in the middle of the Video listing instead of towards the top, and now it gives me error 80029940. Sony wants me to send it in. I told them I was 99% sure it wasn't the PS3 because BR games play just fine. It can't be something wrong with the PS3 if BR games play just fine (and also SD movies).

Help?

P.S. Googling the error gives me more of a feeling that it's not hardware related. Haven't found a fix, just more people with the same problem.

Does your system need any updates? Try a power reset?

It could still be the system if it reads BD games. The disc format is the same but the system handles them differently.

It says I have all current updates. I haven't tried a power reset, I'll google that and try it

If you Google "80029940" there are a lot of suggestions out there for you to try.

But just because games play fine doesn't mean you don't have a hardware problem.

I believe there's an option under "System Settings" to restore the unit to it's factory settings.

Alternatively, here's a way to perform a "Hard Reset" on your system.

*Note - Be sure to backup your settings/games saves by doing a System > Backup on your PS3 or you may lose your game saves!

make sure you just do a setting reset, and not a complete system reformat. There's an option in system settings, or you can just hold down power button for 10 seconds and that will do it.

last resort would be a full system format, but I doubt that will help. You could also try going into your Bluray data folder (in video tab), and deleting anything that may be there.

Cleaned the disc and reset the PS3... a combination of that worked (couldn't just be a dirty disc as a disc that played before didn't want to play anymore).
