Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

A new year is upon us. Lay 'em out and rate 'em as you finish 'em.

Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2008
Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2007
Quote:
I want to bring a little organization to my gaming pile. Mostly to turn the idea into a list thread to be updated. Basically turn it into a running score sheet with a standard grade rating(A-F). So at the end of the year you have one comprehensive record of your nerd accomplishments.

Notes:
- Once you finish a game from your pile of shame bump it to the complete list and rate it.
- no need for a "now playing" or "on deck" section since it is safe to say that you will be playing something from your pile of shame.
- Use your own judgment on games that have no ending like Clubhouse games or sports titles. For example, I feel I got my money's worth of Clubhouse Games, so I consider it "finished" enough to rate it even though I still play it. Even arcade titles like Pac-Man that have no true ending, but getting all the Achievements is a pseudo way of viewing that it is finished enough to rate.
- Leave out impressions since we all discuss the games in their respective threads anyway, just give the finished game a grade. Helps keep things clean.

Completed in 2009...

TitlePlatformReport CardMonth
Lego Indiana JonesXbox 360+ Still the same fun formula, with a higher emphasis on puzzles
- Still the same problems: Bad camera and controls at times
Grade: B-
January
Gears of War 2Xbox 360+ Similar gameplay to the first one, which I really enjoyed
- The vehicles/rideable creatures levels were poor
+ Horde mode is a lot of fun
- Matchmaking is poor, even after the patches
Grade: B+
January
Jade EmpireXbox+ Classic Bioware choose-to-be-good-or-evil gameplay
- Combat was really simplistic, and any skills other than just the normal ones were completely unnecessary
+- I didn't mind, but many people won't like how short it is. I did the main quest plus half of the side quests and finished in 13 hours.
- Basically no puzzles to figure out
Grade: C-
February
Portal: Still AliveXbox 360+ Very fun, and as far as I know, a unique concept
+ Bonus levels
- The main game is very short. The bonus levels add a little length, but it is still short.
- The main game needed more hard-to-solve puzzles.
Grade: A-
February
UnoXbox 360- Tons of quitters online. Games rarely finish with the same lineup with which they started.
+ It is Uno, with a decent number of gameplay variations
Grade: C+
February
Castlevania: Order of EcclesiaDS+- Still the same gameplay that we've seen for 7 (?) games now
- About half of the game isn't unlocked unless you do something specific, that many novice players will not know to do or try to do
+ One of the best Metroidvanias, if you open up all areas
Grade: B+
February
Fallout 3Xbox 360+ Fun combat
+ Good/evil system works better than in KOTOR, Jade Empire etc
+ No respawning enemies except in the wasteland
- Very little variety in the buildings, tunnels, and enemies
- Lots of areas with little to no reward for exploring them
- The ending. There was almost no buildup. The fighting leading up to the ending was really easy and short.
Grade: B
March
RezXbox 360+ Different
+ Stylish
- Very short, unless you want to repeat the same parts dozens of times to get the achievements
Grade: B
March
LostXbox 360- The only thing even a tiny bit fun for me were the fuse puzzles (which most people didn't like). Everything else , especially the caves and forests.
+ Walking around some of the Lost places was mildly interesting. I guess.
+ I bought it for $9.99 from Newegg and sold it for $11 after I was done.
Grade: D-
April
TimeshiftXbox 360- Pause time, kill someone, wait while time gauge refills, repeat * 1000.
- Poor level design
+ The time controls work pretty well
Grade: C-
May
Quantum of SolaceXbox 360? It is called "Quantum of Solace", but every level except one is from Casino Royale
+- Online team balancing is terrible. One team just got blown out in the last round? Let's use the exact same teams again! Multiplayer is good when the teams happen to be balanced though.
+ No crappy vehicle levels
- Froze a number of times
Grade: B-
May
Retro Game ChallengeDS+ The good: Star Prince, Haggleman 3, Guadia Quest
- The bad: Haggleman, Haggleman 2, Rally King, Rally King repeated
- Not sure why, but it is the first DS game that makes my eyes hurt and vision blurry even after as little as 15 minutes of play
+ The metagame
Grade: D due to the eyesight issue. B- without it.
May
Dead SpaceXbox 360+ Cool atmosphere, although it loses a lot of the effect relatively soon
- Not a lot of variety in the enemies
+ Good controls
Grade: A-
June
Left 4 DeadXbox 360- Ridiculously repetitive. Four different areas, and no variation in enemies
- Single-player mode is completely worthless
- Xbox Live with randoms almost never works well
+ Free downloadable content adds a new game mode
+ It was on clearance on Target, and I profited $20 when I sold it
Grade: D
July
Assassin's CreedXbox 360+ Beautiful
+ Freerunning and climbing worked really well, with good controls
- By the last few levels, the only tactic the game used to make it harder was to just flood you with the countless enemies. Even if there were only a couple enemies when the fight began, by the end, you would have killed 12-15 enemies usually.
Grade: B+
July
Bionic Commando: RearmedXbox 360+ Classic 2D goodness
+ Good level and boss designs
+ The arm works very well and is fun to use
- The top-down enemy battles are bad
Grade: A
August
Shadow ComplexXbox 360+ Super Metroid-style gameplay
- The fake-3d-shooting didn't work very well
- Too much hand-holding with secrets showing up on maps, etc
Grade: B+
September
NCAA Football 09Xbox 360- The last version I played was 2004. This has the same bugs and a ton more. Nothing has been fixed, but tons more has been broken.
- Still has a ton of the same commentary as 2004 did. It hasn't even been re-recorded.
- Only one camera option now? 2004 had four or five
- The speeds of many players are way off. No lineman in real life runs an 8-second 40 ,no linebackers run 6-second 40s, etc. Here, they almost all do.
- Pass rush is non-existent, kick coverage is terrible
- Recruiting, which was one of my favorite things in 2004, has become ridiculously tedious and time-consuming. Simming it doesn't work because you end up with too little talent and too much garbage.
Grade: F
September
Rhythm HeavenDS+ Lots of catchy songs
+ Fun variation on rhythm-based games
- Flicks sometimes can be problematic
Grade: A-
October
Terminator SalvationXbox 360[+- Generic third-person shooter with a cover system
- Really short
- 99% of the game involved only 4 different enemies
Grade: D+
October
Halo ODSTXbox 360+- The story and characters are different, but the gameplay is essentially exactly the same as the other Halo games. The same strategies, same enemies, same weapons etc.
- No Firefight matchmaking. Seriously, Bungie?
+ Includes all the Halo 3 map packs
- The included map packs are on disc. There is no code to download them and you can't just installing them and play with the original Halo 3 disc.
Grade: B
November

It appears that only Michael Corvin, atxbomber, and I are actually updating our lists. The question, though, is anyone reading anyone else's lists?

Re: Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

Six people partaking this year?

Oh well, I've knocked out 3 from the pile in the first 5 weeks of this year (Uncharted was borrowed).

Prince of Persia ~ my favorite thus far. I'm about 40% through for a second time, achievement hunting for my final 4 I'm missing. I'll definitely get the DLC. This game was amazing and am looking forward to the expansion.

Little Big Planet ~ If there was ever a game to cripple under the weight of it's own hype, it's this one. The first 2/3 of the game were amazing but when the last third rolled around that required precise platforming, the controls were unforgivable. It's a good game but definitely not GOTY worthy with those controls. How so many people let it slide boggle the mind.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed ~ I had a blast with this. Basically played through twice. Starting on Hard was a bitch, which I found out later, isn't how the game was designed to be played since you keep your stats when you start over. I wouldn't mind nabbing the DLC for this one either except all signs/reviews point to $10 being WAY overpriced for the amount of content they give you(30 minutes to complete).

I'm working on Boom Blox right now and am about 33% complete. I forgot how fun this game is. I've given up on getting all Gold so I can actually finish the game. I think I'm hankering for a FPS next. F.E.A.R., COD:WaW, Turok or Condemned 2. Oh I also have Dead Space that I borrowed from a friend. Decisions... work on the pile or play Dead Space?

Re: Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

I'm putting my list behind a spoiler cut since I added a summary for each game beaten and it got kinda long.
Spoiler:
  • Gears of War 2
    Finished 1/3/2009
    A-

Although there were a few annoying sections, they generally kept the core gameplay of Gears 1 intact while adding a bunch of very impressive setpieces and a couple of interesting plot twists. Horde Mode is a great addition as well. Not quite "game of the year" material for me, but a very solid sequel with plenty of "holy shit!" moments.

  • Prince of Persia
    Finished 1/11/2009
    B

Despite being a well-made and generally fun game, this one has a few major flaws. First of all, so much of what you do is automated. What I mean by that is that a single button press makes your character go through a sequence of several actions. The end result is that you don't get a real sense of direct control over the character. You end up feeling detached from what's happening on the screen. Second big problem - too easy. There's not much challenge in the game at all. Number three - lack of variety. Fourth - without giving anything away, I loathed the direction the story took right at the end. Overall, I like Sands of Time more than this one, although this one is definitely worth renting (which is how I played it).

  • Resistance: Fall of Man
    Finished 1/14/2009
    B+

It only took me two years, but I finally finished this game! It's a solid shooter with some really creative and innovative weapon designs. The story's a bit generic, but it's enough to keep you playing the whole way through. Most of the setpieces and vehicle segments are a lot of fun, and they do a good job of breaking up the monotony of the more straightforward portions of the game. Despite being a launch title, it's still one of the best PS3 games available. Now I get to try out the sequel, which just arrived from Gamefly earlier this week.

  • skate.
    Finished 1/20/2009
    A-

I can't think of another game where the experience is so closely tied into the control scheme. Everything just feels right, and while some of the more complex tricks are difficult to pull off, that seems to make sense. There's a ton of stuff to do, and even though I've made the cover of both magazines, won the X-Games, and beaten the last "jam" (thus essentially finishing the game), there are still a bunch of challenges left for me to mess around with, which I plan to finish at some point soon.

  • The Maw
    Finished 1/24/2009
    B

Great production values for an XBLA title, and it's very cute. The puzzles aren't overly challenging but still provide a little food for thought. It's on the short side, but it's fun while it lasts.

  • Call of Duty: World at War
    Finished 1/25/2009
    B

Yup, it's a Call of Duty game about World War II, all right. Pluses: Keifer Sutherland, the Japanese front, and lots of Russians. Minuses: it brings absolutely nothing new to the table and it can be really annoying on Hardened difficulty. A very generic and run-of-the-mill military FPS, but I'm glad I rented it. Still, Modern Warfare is so much better.

  • Lock's Quest
    Finished 2/6/2009
    A-

An excellent blend of RTS elements and tower defense elements and an interesting plot make this one of the best DS games in recent memory. It has a few flaws, mainly involving the controls, but the experience is fun and unique enough to more than make up for those minor problems.

On Deck:
  • Overlord (maybe 70% done)
  • Fallout 3 (I've only played for a couple of hours so far)
  • Ninjatown (DS) (~25% done)
  • Wario Land: Shake It (roughly halfway done)
  • de Blob (not too far in yet)
  • Penny Arcade Episode 2
  • A Kingdom for Keflings
  • Zack & Wiki (on the last GODDAMNED ANNOYING level - I may have to resort to a FAQ)

I look forward to the 2010 thread with 3 participants.

I do check them out when I update my list. I closed the book on a few that I've had 'open' for a while like Pure, Marvel:UA, & Boom Blox. I'm basically done with Pure, just missing 1st place on a handful of courses. I'm never going to finish Boom Blox at 100% and Marvel was fun for a bit, but it's worn out it's welcome.

Re: Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

Updated mine. My company stopped rolling over vacation this year, so I'm forced to take three weeks off at the end of December. I'm hoping to clear out alot of my gaming backlog then.

Re: Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

My stack of unfinished or unplayed games is ridiculous and would take up too much room, but I'll post the status of 2009 releases I've played/am playing/plan to play. The categories I'm using are fairly self-explanatory. My ratings probably look harsh, but I'm basing everything off of 5 being average, unlike typical review sites that seem to hover around 7 as average. Also, I really don't have a problem with rating an unfinished game if I've played a good enough chunk to feel I understand it's strengths and weaknesses, so that's why there are ratings for almost everything.

Finished
Batman: Arkham Asylum - 10/10
Brutal Legend - 7/10
Ghostbusters - 6/10
Halo 3: ODST - 7/10
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 - 6/10
The Maw - 7/10
Peggle - 6/10
Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time - 8/10
Resident Evil 5 - 7/10
Scrabble - 8/10
Shadow Complex - 9/10
Uncharted 2 - 9/10
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - 6/10

Not finished yet, but definitely will be
Borderlands - 8/10
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - 9/10
Left 4 Dead 2 - rating pending
New Super Mario Bros. - rating pending
Overlord 2 - 6/10
Prototype - 8/10
Splosion Man - 8/10

Started, got distracted and may or may not finish
Beatles Rock Band - 9/10
Boom Blox Bash Party - 7/10
Chronicles of Riddick - rating pending
Dead Space Extraction - 8/10
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - 3/10
Guitar Hero: Metallica - 6/10
Guitar Hero 5 - 6/10
Lord of the Rings: Conquest - 5/10
Red Faction: Guerilla - 7/10
Scribblenauts - 5/10
Tiger Woods 10 - 9/10

Started, will likely never play again
50 Cent: Blood on the Sand - 5/10
Afro Samurai - 4/10
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard - 3/10
Tom Clancy's HAWX - 6/10
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - 5/10

Untouched pile
Bionic Commando
Dragon's Age: Origins
FEAR 2: Project Origin
Godfather 2
Guitar Hero: Van Halen

I go back to the comparison I made earlier to slavery. Slavery existed because it was commercially viable and there were those that justified it using circular logic (i.e. slavery was OK because people wanted to keep slaves). It was only when men of moral character started standing up to the slave traders/owners that the wheels were set in motion for the abolition of slavery. I draw a parallel to straight porn. - art

Re: Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

Haven't done a boatload of gaming this year, so my brief list:

Finished:
Uncharted 2 - PS3 - Single Player: A- // Multiplayer: B // Total Score : A-
Fantastically realized game world, great characters, great script, solid and very entertaining plotline. Drags near the end as the game switches from action/adventure to straight, occasionally lifeless action. Multiplayer is well executed but lacks excitement.

Modern Warfare 2 - X360 - Single Player - B+ // Multiplayer - A- // Total Score - A-
Single player included some of the most memorable, badass game moments of this gen. The story, on the otherhand, is entertaining though cliche and muddled. It's also a tad short, but totally replayable and an absolute blast. Multiplayer is badass - exciting, fast, fun and furious.

Gears of War 2 - X360 - Single Player: B+ // Multiplayer: B+ // Total Score: B+
Single player was a lot more fun (imo) this time around. The levels were varied and the action was an incredible amount of fun. Didn't care much for the plot, but fun no less (and it looked gorgeous). Multiplayer was much better this time around.

Splosion Man - X360 Arcade - Single Player: B+ // Multiplayer: C- (bugs) // Total Score: B-
Best overall platformer so far this year despite bugs that hinder the multiplayer mode.

Little Big Planet - PS3 - Single Player: B // Multiplayer: B // Total Score: B
Relentlessly hyped and beautiful to behold, LBP failed to live up to expectation. The game is fun, but single player is incredibly short and unless you really like collecting things, not particularly fun to replay. The online/user created levels are nice but feel like bonuses instead of core content. Multiplayer doesn't add or take away from the fun for me.

Street Fighter 4 - X360 - Overall: B-
Decent rendition of the classic series, fun but easily forgotten.

Guitar Hero 5 - X360 - Overall: C+
More of the same. Bias though as GH hasn't been my thing since Harmonix stopped developing it, just feels "off".

Unfinished
Infamous (PS3)
Brutal Legend (PS3)
Braid (360)
Shadow Complex (360)
Broken Sword (Wii)
Half-Life 2 (360)

Re: Definitive Finished/Unfinished Report Card Thread 2009

Maybe you would finish more games if you wouldn't constantly write in you diaries about how Nathan Drake brushed your chest as he walked by or how that creepy guy from Infinite Undiscovery keeps leering at you from the back of the class.
