XBOx 360 DVD Playback Quality
I remember hearing that it's terrible, but has it been improved at all over the years? I think that there is upconversion now, but what overall image accuracy beyond that?
Any firmware updates that have helped?
Also wondering, if a buy new XBox (any new one, like the arcade), can I buy an HDMI cable for it or would I need to only be using the HDMI system.

It was fine when it came out, it's still fine now. You gotta remember there was a lot of FUD around the console launches, there always is.
The issue some folks were having relate to the fact that it doesn't upscale unless you're on HDMI (which wasn't available in the past) or VGA (which isn't the most common output for TVs). This is actually true for pretty much all DVD Players and the PS3 as well.

Thanks guys!
I was wondering when you mean quality, are you guys referring to the simple "can play the dvds fine" or also can play the dvds and they look/sound great (from an image quality perspective) compared to good stand alone players (like an Oppo).

I use my 360's HD-DVD player as my main DVD player. Don't wanna wear out the main system if I can help me. You can find the HD-DVD attachment for around 25-30 bucks at Fry's.

i use the elite with hdmi cable rarely for dvds and its okay. Prefer using my ps3 by a landslide and also read that using the 360 to play dvds almost cuts the life in half (don't know how true it is but not willing to put it to the test).
