Is The Wii Compatiable with older Nintendo Games?

Over the years I have stop collecting console systems because they got expensive and I got busy. My last system was the N64 that I had got but that is in my closet and I am not sure if it still works anymore.

In 5 Weeks I should have enough for a PS3 so I will be getting then then I will buy the Wii but I grew up with the older games like Super Mario, Maro Kart. Are any of the games that were with the NES,SNES,N64 compatabile with the Wii?

GCN discs are playable on the Wii. Everything else (N64, SNES, NES, Super Famicom) needs to be downloaded form the Virtual Console for money. The game selection is pretty limited too.

What is the Virtual Console?
I might be better off buying back the NES System, SNES System N64 System
The systems seem to be under $50
