The World Ends With You (Nintendo DS / April 22nd)

My potential DS Game of the Year for 2008:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEzB-EAky7k

We finally have a US release date: April 22nd.

Japanese title: It's a Wonderful World
Developed by: Jupiter
Designed by: Tetsuya Nomura

It's an action-RPG where you control two battles at once.. use the d-pad to enter commands to the top screen and use the stylus to enter commands to the bottom screen. It's in a modern-day setting and there's a heavy emphasis on style and musical culture.

Haha nice translation -

From "It's a Wonderful World" to "The Worlds Ends With You"

For some reason the music near the end brought back memories of Crystalis.

"It's a Wonderful World" is the title of a movie or book, hence the change.

It's probably also an album and a line of sports drinks.

I love how the font almost looks Japanese on the cover. I like the new title...

IGN Preview:

EXCITEMENT TIMES ONE MILLION!

March 14, 2008 - To be totally honest, there aren't too many games out there that strike us as truly unique anymore. Director Suda 51 has done some great work on GCN and Wii with Killer 7 and No More Heroes respectively, and the style change that went into the creation of Wind Waker back on GameCube also managed to raise some eyebrows, but it isn't every day that we stumble across a game that actually delivers -- be it visually or functionally -- something that we haven't seen in gaming before. After all, the industry has been around for nearly three decades now -- it's bound to get a bit repetitive, right?

Square Enix begs to differ, as we have in front of us what can only be described as one of the most unique and stylistic experiences we've seen in years. Every once in a while a game comes along that really mixes things up on its platform, and that's exactly what The World Ends With You is doing on DS.
Three. More. Weeks.

As long as I don't have to endure turn-based battles, I'll check it out.

Nice. A friend of mine imported the JPN version and it looked good. I didn't know it was coming out so soon.

I haven't played a Square game in many moons, but I will be adding this one to my Gamefly queue. I'm not sold on it yet, but I like to at least check out games that bring something new to the table.

I like how you can instantly tell Nomura designed this by looking at the characters. Looks fun, I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Good timing as I'll probably have an idle DS at that time as I'm finishing up Apollo Justice in the coming week or so. I only play 30-60 minutes, every couple of days and I just started the 4th case.

I just pre-ordered the game from Amazon and I'm pretty stoked about it. After getting my ass handed to me on a platter with Shiren on a constant basis, I'm looking forward to a normal RPG game.

Well, this is going to be quite far from a "Normal RPG" but I think your wish to be treated with a little more tenderness than Shiren the Wanderer offers will be granted tenfold.

A comic and round table interview have been posted on the Square-Enix site:
http://member.square-enix.com/na/features/wewy/

The game has been in development since before the DS was released!

Oddly enough, EGM reviews this game and Shiren in the current issue and both reviewed very well and ended up with Silvers. Only posting because I know that you hate EGM and they often poorly review the titles you hold so dear, so, a change from the norm is kinda of interesting.

I definitely find a positive review of Shiren from them VERY surprising. They gave the game's direct sequel (Torneko: The Last Hope) a 2 or 3 many years ago and to be honest, that game does a lot of things better then Shiren does. Perhaps they finally realized that there are certain games that are aimed at an actual hardcore audience (and not the new "mainstream" hardcore) and are reviewing them with those players in mind because I think they reviewed Etrian Odyssey positively as well.

The World Ends With You, on the other hand, isn't that surprising. I think it's got all the ingredients to become a huge sleeper hit. At least I'm hoping it does, I swear I've been excited for this game longer than I have been for No More Heroes and that was a monster wait (which ended up delivering in spades, doubly). I've got to give my props for the stylistic games.

I think the real question is does this game involve guys kissing, people having sex or severed heads. If the answer to any of the above is no, then count me out! On the other hand I do enjoy when unusual play mechanics are implemented and this game seems like it will have the pixy seal of approval even if it doesn't have the sex we all desire.

I'm on "media blackout" for this game, but in case other people want to peek at it..

I've been reading nothing but very positive reviews for this. Got mine pre-ordered. Really excited for it!
