Mortal Kombat - Deception (X-Box, PS2)

Okay, MK is almost here. My only gripes thus far...

Sub Zero is...The Shredder from TMNT?

and the fact that it's unknown so far if the level Deathtraps can be turned on or off (I'm imagining some incredibly cheap online play from cheesers).

Other than that, the game looks fantastic. Mortal Kombat Chess, MK Tetris, two fatalities and a 'hara kiri' movie for each character...

Character List/Fighting Styles (put in spoilers, just in case)
Spoiler:
1) Scorpion: Hapkido, Moi Fah, Mugai Ryu.
2) Baraka: Silat, Hung Gar, Blades.
3) Mileena: Ying Yeung, Mian Chuan, Sai.
4) Sub-Zero: Shotokan, Dragon, Kori Blade.
5) Kabal: Sun Bin, Goju Ryu, Hookswords.

Unlockable fighters
13) Hotaru: Pi Gua, Ba Shan Fan, Naginata.
14) Sindel: Zha Chuan, Fu Jow Pai, Kwan Do.
15) Li Mei: Baji Quan: Lui He Ba Fa, Melon.
16) Kenshi: Tai Chi, Judo, Katana.

19) Kira: Xing Yi, Kenpo, Dragon Theeth.

Does anyone know if they scrapped the idea of the xbox version having a different cover art different stores? The last time I read anything about it the distribution was set up as

Scorpion - Ebgames
Raiden - Wal Mart
Baraka - Game Stop
Mileena - Toys R Us

In todays ads Best Buy had the Mileena cover pictured and Target had the Scorpion.

Just got my latest issue of XBN on Saturday, and skimming through it last night, IIRC they gave this game a 5 out of 10! I haven't had a chance to fully read the review to see why they panned this one yet, but I was surprised to see that kind of score.

I see that IGN has given the Xbox version a score of 8.8. Ah, that makes me feel a bit better. Never did care for XBN much anyway...

In those situations, I carefully read through both articles. I find it easier to make a decision when you see both sides of the story. What did XBN not like about the game?

As I mentioned, I didn't read XBN's article yet -- I was just doing a quick skim as I was going through the other mail and saw the score. I'll read it tonight and see what they have to say.

I did fully read IGN's review and came away very impressed. Sounds like MK fans have a nice game to look forward to.

XBN is so lame.

They gave the last Mortal Kombat 6/10 and it was awesome.

Reasons for the score of 5? Among them, one was that there were 3 fighting styles when you only need to use 1 - haha, okay, so if they only had one fighting style for each character, they'd probably bitch that there weren't enough!

Get the game. It's going to rock.

Is that Stryker in the cell in this pic? Me thinks it is...

My Target ad had just the regular $49.99 Deception cover with the MK logo (the dragon) on it.

As for Best Buy, they may have the "catch all" cover of Mileena. Mileena is for Toys R Us, Game Crazy (Hollywood Video video game store) and Game Rush (Blockbuster game store).

The special covers are the $59.99 Kollector's Edition (or Premium Pack for PS2 with Sub-Zero on the cover) that include an extra disc with MK1 and a myriad of extras on it along with the regular game.

Well, I just picked up the regular edition of the game today. I was not THAT impressed with it....yet. I only played it a little bit. Maybe once I learn some moves it will help. It was decent. I played one LIVE game and it ran very smoothly....no lag or anything. very impressive. Played the puzzle kombat....that was decent.

I've yet to get any of the fatalities to work. Further, having to find "keys" in konquest mode to unlock all the fighters blows.

So last yeah you had to sort thru the Krypt and this year you have to find keys in that, what I thought looked to be lame, mode?

I really thought about getting this game but I can't bring myself to do it. The last game was fun but I didn't care for the three fighting styles and a few other things. I never cared for DOA and it seems to me that this game keeps inching closer toward that kind of fighter.

I would still get this but there are so many other games coming out that I know I would enjoy 100 times more. By the time it comes down in price and I rethink buying it....I wonder if people will still be playing it online.

I got it today and it's pretty good so far, although I've only scratched the surface. I think Sektor is in the game somewhere.

It's hard at first, I have to get used to this one...

Hmm.. if you like the snazzy box art. I got it just for the original MK. I was all excited and played it for 15 minutes and quickly lost the joy.

The whole video bios and MK history videos were fun, but was a little short.

And so far, puzzle kombat is worth the price on its own.

I just want to cover all bases, but in case you didn't know you have to use your "martial art" switch in order to enter fatality mode, then enter the fatality motion.

Dangit, they should really print something like that in big, bold, comforting letters!

I was just reading on GameFAQs as well. I guess you can pull a fatality without going into Fatality mode. However I would try to go into Fatality mode and see if you can pull them off. The sucky thing about fatalities is that they are dependant on length away from the opponent.

You can do them without being in the Fatality stance. All that does is make sure your character doesn't move around when you try to pull it off. It doesn't suck that you have to be a certain distance away...that's how it used to be for MK 1-3 (I can't remember if 4 was like that or not). There's only three different "distances". Either next to the character, a sweep distance away, or far away. There's probably a few where distance doesn't matter. I only played it for about an hour last night when I picked it up.

I guess I termed it incorrectly. Remembering how far you have to be away is the trouble. Yes, this has been a mainstay throughout the MK games.

Why is the PS2 special edition packaging better than Xbox's? I would much rather have the second disc in its own case other than a crappy paper sleeve.
