Maybe you need to get into it further, it gets really interesting later on and very tough, especially when you have to infiltrate the CIA HQ. Personally, i love the game, its one of the best i have for my XBox and a great game all around.

I agree. Awesome game. I guess some people need fast paced action at all times to enjoy a game.......

I'll have to agree with the ol captain, the story and characters for splinter cell, for me, weren't at all memorable... I mean I remember sam fishers name, but I couldn't name the major bad guy, that chief dude that gives sam his orders, the side kick dude with out going through the game and writing their name's down. As for the story ummmm, off the top of my head i don't remember.
That said I still thoroughly enjoyed the game from beginning to end...I guess this is one of those games where the game play alone was good enough to carry it through.

Unlike Metal Gear where I rivetted saying to myself "WOW! What's going to happen next?". Splinter Cell feels like a bunch of seperate, disjointed and unrelated missions. There's little or no motivation to other than "following orders".

Sam Fisher also seems to be a rather dull, flat, undynamic character. Great characters like Solid Snake, Wolverine, Daredevil, and even James Bond have more going on under the surface. Sam Fisher aspires to those roles but in the end he just follows orders to the letter. There seems to be little else driving him and that makes the character, for me at least, very unappealing and not very fun to play as.

I'd hate to say it, but Sam Fisher almost makes covert ops seem boring.

I agree with you. I just wish there wasn't so much repitition. If only they allowed a few failures that would change the storyline instead of the linear story there is now, I would like it far better. So what if the hostages just got shot? I'm in the middle of a firefight dammit. Don't tell me the missions over. Thats just gay.

well, there was the 1st mistake. get an xbox, its version is better.

I have to say that honestly, I'm more than a bit underwhelmed.
not very surprising...

Sam Fisher aspires to be some kind of "uber agent" but I just kept saying
he doesnt "aspire" to be an uber agent, he IS an uber agent. A guy who is aspiring to be an agent is prolly still in training or something. Sam is doing real Ops... ops that have global-war-type implications. I dont think the NSA sends out rookies for that kinda thing.

"What am I doing again? And more importantly why am I supposed to care?" Basically the game's story really isn't very riveting.
other than the fact that the fate of the entire planet is hanging in the balance, you're right, there isnt much going on worth caring about.

I've only played about 20% or so of the game it so far there hasn't been anything about any of the characters or about Sam Fisher that makes them/it memorable. There's no other motivation besides "following orders"
have you even played the game? Sam is involved in all kinds of international intrigue that if it went badly could result in REALLY bad times... lots of people dying and stuff. SOME people would consider that "motivation". what better motivation could there be?

there's no real reason to like Sam.
theres lots of reasons to like sam... he has a sense of humor, he kicks ass, and he is worried about his daughters well-being. Seems like an all around good guy to me.

I don't know am I missing something?
heh, if u have to ask you prolly know the answer already.

I got an XBOX for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but over Xmas vacation, I got Splinter Cell because the commercial looked cool, and I must say it is an AWESOME game, I am anything but a hardcore gamer, but this Splinter Cell sucked me in and I just could not get enough...I found it to be very tough, but when I finally finished it, I felt such a great feeling of accomplishment...I would definitely give this a **** out of **** rating

First off, I'm not getting an XBox just to play Splinter Cell. That's $250 I could spend on other stuff. You don't want me walking around homeless carrying an XBox under my arm do you?

The whole thing about "Well he's saving the world from World War III". Is he? I don't get any feeling of urgency. During Metal Gear Solid you felt like something huge was going down. I'm not getting the sense that if he fails it's going to be armageddon. I know it's still early in the game, but I think that should have been conveyed alot better. Other than a NewsFlash, that really didn't make a lot of sense, I didn't get the feeling that there was anything riding on this mission. Too much is implied. I don't think the argument "Well you should know alot is riding on this mission" is an adequate justification of why I am sneaking around in a former Soviet Republic looking for generic bad guys.

Yes I am playing the game. But thus far it's slow going. Unfortunately like most of us, I don't have an unlimited amount of time to devote to playing it.

Okay, the whole "aspiring" to be an Uber Agent. Sam Fisher is a new character. And I'm sure that Ubi Soft want him to be considered in the same class AS a 007, or a Solid Snake. Remember he's an unfamiliar character to alot of us. It's only natural that we'd like to know a little more about him. But so far all I've seen of his sense of humor is "I want you to forget you saw me. Now convince me."

Sam seems like an all around "good guy", but there's nothing there. He seems rather flat. No personality. I know they are going for "realism" but as another poster said just because it's more realistic doesn't mean it's more fun to play. And like I stated before, I really do feel that once I knew more about Raiden's past I found him a little more likeable ( or if you will tolerable).

I really do think that Ubi Soft could have stood to work a little more on the overall "presentation". The missions parameters are often too strict, and there is little room for improvisation. Something a covert ops specialist would have to do is to think on the fly. There's almost a "connect the dots" feel to Splinter Cell that really hinders the player.

I really want to like this game, but there's too much I can't ignore that I can't give Ubi Soft a "free pass" on.

I guess if you like the flamboyant, non-sensical, cheesy plot of MGS2, then there's not much to say. Just kidding...

Anyway, this game is all about the gameplay. And the Xbox version is much better graphically.

Can't wait for the sequel.

I agree that Splinter Cell has an average plot, but using MGS2 as an example of a good one? Huh?

MGS2 plot might not have been the best in a game. BUT, it was very immersive, it gave me the feeling that I was playing through an action/sci fi movie. We all KNOW those movie plots are not the best, but they are entertaining nonetheless and we watch them. MGS plot doesnt seem so extremely linear, there are twists and revelations. In Splinter Cell, from the beginning of the game, and to the point I am in now, the plot is to "save the world." Basically, you get from point A to point B. I picture a racing game, one track is an oval, another track is full of twists and turns. Oval track=Splinter Cell, Twisty Turny track=MGS

I finished the game last night. Did it seem too short to anyone else? The ending didn't seem like an ending. I was expecting another mission when he got that phone call.

Well the problem is you bought the PS2 version, get the GameCube edition, it is the best play wise and graphic wise IMHO.

I may be mistaken, but aren't those the awards that are pretty much bought by the developers? I think 'The Thing' won best action game of the year.

I think the obvious problem is that you guys didn't buy the version with the bestest graphics ever: the Game Boy Advance version. Screw the story, you'll be hypnotized by those graphics.

The comparison reviews I've seen put the GC version dead last.

Haven't had a chance to play this game yet, but I wanted to point out that Captain Harlock said Metal Gear Solid, not Metal Gear Solid 2, there's a big difference.

You mean you never saw him? He was a secret character, you had to do a code to get him.

(or maybe I misinterpreted his post because I didn't read all of it..... )

True. But you also do get the feeling in MGS2: Sons Of Liberty that there's somthing "bigger" going on as well. Albeit it may be on a more "fantastic" scale. I know what some of you are saying. "What could be bigger than World War III?", but bear with me a second. The main issue I have thus far is that the missions you are playing through aren't tied together very well. The gameplay is extraoridinary as well as the graphics. I've stated that in previous posts. But the overall presentation feels like it's a bunch of seperate missions with no common thread. I finished the Oil Rig mission last night and it really seemed to be out of place in the whole context of the story. I still had no idea what he was doing there. I just think that Ubi Soft could have done a much better job at tying all the missions together with some additional background info and/or some decent story line reinforcement. Perhaps if I play through the entire game I will have one of those Sienfeld moments; Who was that guy? What was he doing with the other guy? OOOOOOOHHHHH!! Now I get it. But at the moment the game seems very disjointed.

I admit that was carelessness on my part. I wasn't very clear on that issue. In the words of Willy Wonka "Strike that....Reverse it".

All reasonable complaints. It's true that all of the ingame cinemas and the lack of abruptly jumping from one location to another help tie the narrative together in the MGS games. I think my problem with MGS2 was after a while it was being laid on so thick that I started to tune it out.

It will be great seeing MGS3 and SC2 competing against each other in the future.

I have been playing the Xbox version. I have had it since it came out but due to time, I take forever to finish games. I am on the last level now but still have Kola Cell to keep me busy for a little bit when I finish the main game.

Personally, I think it is one of the best games that I have played. Maybe b/c I don't have tons of time, but I never get absorbed into a video game's story b/c I have to break it up so much. I am lucky to finish a level or two a week on any video game (story driven that is).

In comparison to Metal Gear, I recently bought Substance for cheap and thought I would try it out. Splinter Cell has completely spoiled me with it's controls b/c it makes me hate Metal Gear's controls. Does anyone else find that?

Story-wise, between the two, Splinter Cell seems more realistic while Metal Gear seems more like a cartoon. But again, this is just an amateur gamer's opinion.

Has anybody replayed the game on HARD yet. I started the first mission last night and so far have not noticed any difference in the difficulty. Is there a big difference?

Great game, not to everyones taste.

Story picks up around the 4th level (CIA), and while I too was disappointed it wasn't a over-engrossing story like the ones in MGS/MGS2, the gameplay and atmosphere more than makes up for it.

It took me 3 months from the time I started the game to even play through the first two levels, after that I was hooked and finished the game a week later. Something about the first few levels just isn't all that entertaining.

oh and - PC > Xbox > PS2 = GC, imho.

Also - this too is now one of my favorite videogames. Just got Kola Cell a few days ago, haven't had a chance to play through it though.

I haven't had much time to play SC (Xbox) unfortunately, but so far the game trounces MGS in terms of gameplay. The stealth aspect is infinitely more fleshed out and I generally feel like I'm in control of everything that I do. I also prefer the simple narrative to MGS2's achingly bad, pseudo-manga drivel.
