Activision announced today that legendary Atari-era adventurer, Pitfall Harry, will be making his return to next-gen consoles. Currently in the works at developer Edge of Reality, the simply titled Pitfall Harry will be available for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and GBA, promising 50 levels, from rainforests to glaciers, as Harry uses his athletic abilities and a knapsack "filled with adventure gear" to overcome all obstacles.
"Pitfall Harry will let players take on the role of the daring explorer who laughs in the face of danger as he rescues those in distress from deadly foes and searches for lost treasures," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president, Activision worldwide studios. "This all new adventure delivers highly detailed graphics, fast paced action pathways and a host of interactive goals. Classic vine swinging and pit hopping action combined with Harry's quirky sense of humor will make Pitfall Harry one of the most sought after titles of the year."
OK.
Diehard Harry fans may recall this is not the fearless one's first attempt at resurrection. The 16-bit era saw Activision release Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, an effort probably best forgotten. Pitfall 3D: Beyond the Jungle hit the PSOne some five years ago, and that one wasn't bad at all -- a little generic maybe, but not bad, and made slightly more memorable by adding the voice talent of Bruce Campbell as Harry.
How this latest outing will measure up is, of course, anybody's guess at this point. Activision plans to release the new Pitfall Harry sometime this Fall, 2003.
My only complaint is the character design for Harry, I alway envisioned him as more of an Indiana Jones type. He kind of looks like Jimmy Neutron here.

I don't recall the Atari version of Harry wearing leggings and a spandex V-cut shirt to show off his chest hair. Do I see an earing too?
