xbox outsells Gamecube in Japan
My friend in Korea was translating a Korean website which has the latest sales numbers.
Xbox went from about 3000 hardware units per week to overtaking the GC in sales for the week of 1/19 - 1/25
Here's the numbers:
PS2 - 65,258
Xbx - 18,125
GCN - 8952
This can surely be attributed to the release of DOAX (also known as DOAH - the H standing for Hentai ^_^)... this is the first Xbox game that people lined up for outside of stores. This is certainly a small victory for Xbox. This hardly means they're going to take over Japan any time soon.
The website is in Korean, but unless I posted a link you wouldn't take this seriously.
www.ruliweb.com is where my friend found it and they reported seeing it first at http://www.xboxmagazine.co.kr
If you can read Korean, I can give you instructions on how to find the article... it's #14966

DOAX is definitely the type of game thats going to find an audience in Japan. I'm not just talking about the girls. The whole way the gameplay is set up is a lot like many imports I've gotten over the years.
Good news for Namco.

Hey, all they need is some really lame-ass RPGs and Xbox will be selling like crazy in Japan. It's a surefire win.
Seriously, this is good news. Though, can you imagine the guys waiting in line for the stores to open to get this game? Oh yeah, you know the kind..
Have you seen the US commercial for DOA Volleyball, it's hilarious.

And? I already stated that it was just a small victory and that it doesn't mean Xbox is taking over Japan. Were you just making sure it was quite obvious that Xbox is still the loser console of the universe?

They even got a Blink X-box set and a lot of accesories lined up.

Hey Kumar J,
Is it just me or does it always seem like whenever I go to Akihabara (Electronic city in Tokyo), all the Xboxes with the newest releases draw a big line to play while the Gamecube and PS2's crowd don't even compare? Its kind of weird, but it may be because the last time I went down there (over winter break), Panzar Dragon had just come out (woohoo, before the U.S.), DOAX was all over the big screens (watch only, no play), and that new fighting game that looks beautiful but I hear sucks in gameplay. Anyways, I had to wait for like 30 min. before playing Panzar Dragon. They also had these little booths with a 5.1 DD surround sound system in each one, a widescreen TV, and an XBOX hooked up. One of which had STEEL BATALLION. I felt so bad for the Japanese guy trying to play it because all the buttons were labeled in English, and it took him forever to take off.
Anyways, PS2 had that new RPG game being on display and there were only about 3 or 4 machines out, compared to the 20 or so for the XBOX. The cube had about 10 machines out. None of the PS2 consoles were being played and the cube had a few.
I guess the PS2 is still going quite strong, probably because of their big library. But, seriously, Billy Gates is pushing strong here in Japan, and the presence is felt on the streets. Further evidence: one of my kids in class the other day told me out of the blue "I want an XBOX! Its the best!" Wow...what is Billy G. doing to the kids here.

I find this very hard to believe. Neither of those sites are known as good sources of sales information. I'll wait to see it on http://www.the-magicbox.com/
