I am considering modding an Xbox. I would probably just get another one to tinker with. With the Mame and Media player possibilities it would be fun to try it out. Xbox Live should not be your reason for holding back if your interested. I believe you can get on live with some of the newer mod chips.

As long as I don't have to actually modify the system: gameshark, disc you could load, stuff like that. There was a disc for the Dreamcast you could load to play import games. There was the Gameshark for the original playstations.

You needed another option, "I have modded my Xbox to unlock it's full potential and still purchase retail games"
I didn't vote because none of the options fit what I do.

I have MAME for my computer and a media player on my computer as well, so don't need it for that stuff.
There aren't any games released in Japan that won't be coming to the US that are worth playing, no?
I really don't see any reason to hack the box unless you are an piracy person.
GCN is a different story, PS2 also. THose get good exclusive games in Japan first that you might want to import and sometimes the games are exclusive to Japan. Not the case with Xbox.

Here is one of the chips. This is the solder-free one:

I bought a matrix, beware though, they make it out to be easy, but I had problems with the programmer and the placement of the chip.
