But for a game like Silent Hill 2, well the ending IS part of gameplay, you want to know why James Sutherland got the mysterious letter from his wife and why Maria keeps popping up all over the place. Sad to say, the ending is as ambiguous as anything and shreds very little on the story. (Granted you can make some educated conjectures and fill in the pieces, still it doesn't leave enough meat for the player to chew on)

My vote goes for MGS2:SOL. I love this game but it got way too convoluted way too late in the game. It was all going fine when Ocelot was doublecrossing everyone and the Patriots were an interesting concept. But then the game got way too weird and took Solidus' story (which was sorta cool) and threw it out the window by suddenly ignoring the patriarcal theme that was present throughout most of the game.
ANd I'm well aware that the explanation for the Patriots fits with Mei Ling's comments in MGS but it was way too wild a spin for the kind of story that was being told.

You are all too young. Either that or you have forgotten about Eye of the Beholder and the infamous 'dump to DOS' ending.
A great game by the way.....I've probably replayed it more than any other game.

The ending to Metal Gear Solid 2: S*** Out of Luck really sucked.
The ending to FFVII was probably the worst ending for an RPG of that calibur. Ranks right up there with the ending to Chrono Trigger.
Best game endings:
Actraiser
Final Fantasy II and III
Super Metroid
Star Fox 64
Zelda: OoT
Zelda: Link's Awakening
Phantasy Star IV

Okay I just thought of one. In Eye of the Beholder 2 for the PC, after you beat the last boss, you get a text message of congrats and after you press enter, you get dropped back into the DOS prompt. How lame is that??

I'm pretty sure it was EOB 1 that did it, but maybe 2 did also.
