plasma screens for gaming - good or bad?

I'm in the market for a new TV now and have been thinking about getting a plasma TV. I think playing games on a plasma TV is bad though... anyone know for sure? I heard that plasma screens are susceptible to burn-in. I've been thinking about getting a plasma screen, but if they can get burned in by static images from a video game, there's no way I'm going to buy one.

I think as long as you don't go an constant 12 hour gaming marathons you would be alright. Personally, I think television companies just like to scare the crap out off consumers with their burn-in warnings. I've been playing games on RPTV's (also susceptable to burn-in) for years with no problems.

Use caution and vary the games/playing time and all should be ok.

I think the big problem might be "smearing" on the screen when you play fast-paced games.

They can have burn-in just like a RPTV. Just make sure not to leave the game paused for a long period of time with the same image on the screen. If you do plan on pausing, just turn the TV off until you continue playing, and you should be fine. Also, as SmackDaddy said, you may want to avoid game marathons on it as well.

I'm not really sure, but from what I've read plasma sets suffer burn in a lot easier than rear projection sets... I really don't think I would risk it.

so far no issues. Got a plasma tv about 2 months ago. lots of gaming in the house. I think the longest played was about 3 hours at a time. If i pause to walk to the dog or something that will take a while, I turn the tv off, or I switch the input.
as mentioned, the biggest pain is the smearing. the further back you sit though it gets a little better (not much)

I don't have a plasma screen, but my friend has a 55" RPTV and does almost nothing but play games on it, and it still looks as good as the day he bought it.

Hmm...you have have like 7k blow? wow..or getting really small one? Darn burn in though.. Hoping they find technology soon resolve this issue, as called user abuse and no will cover it if happens. I play too much video games, so going wait it out more from my first taste of HDTV few years ago. Anyway every looks fantastic on my sony trintron. at least alot better then those ugly wegas. My sister just got Hitachi and its dream 43inch HDTV. I definitely be going that route when my time comes over Toshiba and sony, they just lost alot quality last few years.

The only technology I've hear of not susceptible to burn in is DLP. Rear projection DLPs are fairly slim, but not enough to be wall mountable. They don't take up a whole lot of floor space, but they are just about as expensive as a plasma.

Front projection on the other hand if you are in a dark room you can get a DLP projector for under $2000 that can produce over a 100 inch screen. You make some minor (imo) sacrifices in picture quality, but I just got an Infocus X1 for $1600 (standard price for it right now). I haven't had time to set it up yet, but I took it out for a quick look and at about the same size as a plasma the picture was excellent other than the black levels. When I set it up this weekend will be four times that size. The main drawback is the need for the room to be dark, which may not work so well for games all the time.

You dont have to worry about burn in as much as your refresh rate. Thats what the "smearing" is.
