arcanum has a good story line, and a real extensive character detail. you won't play a same game twice with arcanum, its also very flexible in what you want to do. however, unless you are dedicated to the game, it can get boring since it takes a lot of energy to play such a deep game. personally, i thought it was ok. but i know some people love this game because of the reasons i mentioned. i was just not in the mood for a hardcore game like that.

Pc Gamer picked arcanum as roleplaying game of the year.
If you wait over the next few months elder scrolls III (march), dungeon seige(april), icewind dale II (may), and Neverwinter Nights (june) will be out.

Wizardry 8 is a great game... if you like party-based first-person RPG's. I never did like the fact that in games like Wizardry 8 or the Might and Magic series, you control a whole group of adventurers, yet they move as one individual. It just doesn't make sense. It's especially annoying when you're fighting 6 vs 6 and the enemy can surround you. Just dumb IMO. I played Wizardry 8 for a few days and got sick of it; returned it.
I like RPG's, but I think they should be played in third-person perspective. Unless you're only controlling one character.

arcanum is third person...just to let you know. i think if you are trying to choose between the two, just read more about them at review sites and stuff, cuz both are really good games, just depends on your taste.

I only played Arcanum, but I thought it was well worth my money. The only problem I had was that the game seemed to scroll rather slow (but that could be my computer).
