How do I make Ms. Pac-Man go fast on MAME?

I can't seem to figure out how to change the settings on Ms. Pac-Man to speed her up like they do in the arcades. Can anyone help me out? I know hitting F9 speeds up the whole game, but the ghosts speed up as well.

Thanks in advance,

From MAME.dk

- Your character in the game moves too slow; in the arcade you go much faster. The speed in mame is correct to the original game. However, many of the Ms. Pac-Man machines that are still in arcades have had been modified to speed up the gameplay. You can play this way by enabling cheats in MAME. Note: This is a 'built-in' cheat, and is accessed from the dip switch menu instead of the usual cheat menu.

Okay, I'm an idiot. I enabled cheats in the Default Options screen, but when I get to the dipswitch menu by pressing F1+F2+F3, I can't change anything there, nor is there anything about playing fast.

I don't have MAME available to me right now, but I checked on Usenet and someone said this:

When you get the game loaded, press the 'tab' key, then select 'dip switches', you will see a setting that says 'speedup cheat'. Set that to on and your good to go.

Thanks for your help, Goblincat. I think there's something I need to change on my settings because the Tab key doesn't seem to do anything for me.

I just tried it out, and the speed up is there. Not sure why tab isn't bringing up your menu. It should.

I figured it out. Turns out version 0.58 doesn't seem to toggle the cfg menu with the tab key. I went back to 0.57 and it worked fine.

Now how do I explain my plans to build a MAME cabinet to my fiancee?

Show her pics of mine and tell her how cool it would look.

Of course you could always just slowly and secretly buy the parts, and then one day tell her that you think you might have enough parts lying around to build one from scratch and that you would like to try.

What I did was to just show my wife some pictures and told her that this is what I was planning on doing. Of course, the first thing she said was "Is this going to turn out like your Trabuchet" (A scaled down catapult that I started building but never finished). After she saw all of the work I was putting into it, she became impressed and accepted it (although I do have to keep it in the basement).
