Mad Catz stops selling PS2 memory cards

Quote:
The company's license to develop third-party memory cards expires as Sony reevaluates its strategy regarding the product.

Mad Catz Interactive has announced that its agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment America to sell its own third-party PlayStation 2 memory card has expired. The company said that SCEA will not renew any licenses for third-party memory cards and is currently evaluating its overall strategy regarding the product.
"While our existing license for the North American market has expired, we continue to negotiate with SCEA for a renewal of the license and are hopeful that we will obtain a new agreement in the first quarter of calendar 2002," said Darren Richardson, president of Mad Catz.

Mad Catz will continue to sell PS2 memory cards in PAL territories under a separate license.
Were there any other 3rd Party memory cards? I can't remember is Pelican has a card or not. I wonder if this will go for controllers as well. Will Madcatz be forced to recall all unsold memory cards left in major stores. Or will the stock simply be sold off and no more will be produced. ???

Theres a 16meg card that is out. Can't remember the company, but you have to run a memory manager software first before starting any games. Otherwise the PS2 won't see the memory card.

I think that was Interact? Anyways, you have to load a cd first before it can be used with your cd. That sucks. Having to put that cd in first, load the software, put your ps2 game in, let the ps2 game load and then play. It adds to the wait which is sometimes long for some games. Too much of a pain.

Apparently Sony is getting a bit nervous about their Magic Gate technology and they want to be the controlling factor when all the interactive/online stuff comes in full force the next couple of years.

I don't see anything wrong with the first party Sony memory card. You really only need one memory card, anyway. 8 MB is a lot of game saves.

My sony card is starting to fill up, i'm probably close to 7MB now... But thats with ALOT of games, probably 8 game saves and settings on there.

I have a MadCatz card that i got for 19.99 at walmart (using an instore credit) I'll use it for other things, like madden season (which take up a little over 1MB) and the DVD settings if i get the remote with the new drivers (which if i understand take up alot of memory card space)

I've got 2 Sony cards and they are almost full. NCAA 2002 is the biggest culprit. Dynasty files, roster updates, etc.

I bought a Sharkport and moved some of my saves that I don't use much to my hard drive (Onimusha after completing the game, etc).
