"must have" dreamcast games?

well.. I had a family member pick me up and dreamcast for christmas, since it was only 49.99..
i refuse to pay 300 for a console.. so I have stuck with my playstation for the past few years.. I have a couple hundred games for it, but the laser is starting to die.. so I figured it was time for something new

so.. now Ill start playing with this dreamcast for a year or so.. until I break down and buy an xbox

but the question... what are the 'must have' games for the dreamcast?

Im into all the sports games.. real time strategy (love games like age of kings).. my wife loves the sims games..

suggestions?

Grandia 2 was pretty good. I didn't really care for any of the other DC games I played/owned.

If you like RPGish games, also pick up Record of Lodoss War. Sort of like Diablo, but mostly outside and a much better game, in my opinion. I don't like Diablo. Anyway, it's maybe 35 hours if you do everything?

Oh, and Skies of Arcadia, too.

Here are games that I've found to be fun. Some are rentals, some are ones I've bought really inexpensively (I bought an open-box but pretty much new Dreamcast for $60 last summer), and some are ones I've played at friends' places.

Jet Grind Radio
Grandia II
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Capcom vs SNK 2
Power Stone 2 (if you can find it cheap)
Sonic Adventure / Sonic 2
Worms
Soul Calibur
Mark of the Wolves (although I'm a Neo-Geo fan)
Virtual On (for quick bursts of fun)
Crazy Taxi (ditto - arcade-like)

I haven't played these (well, I played about 10 minutes of Shenmue), but I've heard they're good:
Shenmue/Shenmue II
Skies of Arcadia
Tony Hawk 2

Most of those don't go with your tastes (I generally don't like sports games), and I'm not aware of any good strategy games for the Dreamcast, but you might want to look into them anyway. The Dreamcast had/has some really great games.

Been mentioned already, but to chime in anyway...
Soul Calibur (THE best fighting game ever)
NFL2k2(best in football)
NCAA2k2(best in college football)
virtua tennis 2k2(tennis at its best, and great fun to play with others)
Marvel vs Capcom 2(bring back those 2D memories)
Shenmue(most own, no game like it anywhere else)
Bust-a-move 4(if your in to puzzle games need this)
Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia(RPG fix)
Jet Grind Radio(very cool game practice those graffitti skills)
Power stone 1,2(good by yourself better with a friend)
Chu-chu rocket(puzzle game, best for multiplay)
and maybe later on
House of the Dead(need a reason to use the light guns)
Phantasy Star Online(it does come with a modem, might as well use it)

There are of course a lot more, but these are a great way to start

my fav's,

metropolis street racer
ferrari f-355
test drive le mans
soul calibur
nfl2k
fur fighters
hydro thunder

i'm sure others that were mentioned are all great also but i try not to buy any must have games unless i happen to like that type of game.
in the past i bought to many of these because they were labeled must have and so they found there place on the shelf of the hardly used unplayed games.

The DC is alive and kicking lots of titles out there for all sorts of tastes. I am a very open minded gamer and usually find the fun in any game unless it is just unplayable, here are some games that don't get much attention but are good.

Gauntlet legends great multiplayer RPG lite

Jedi Power Battles 2 player platformer underrated

Alone in The Dark survival horror perfection

Headhunter (UK import) my fav game of the year

Starlancer a pc port but a good one if you like space combat

Demolition Racer satisfyingly chaotic

I have heard good things about Coaster Works and Super runabout as well intend to get them.

Can we get some votes on the "best of category" games? The categories should be (at the least) racing, fighting, simulation, action/adventure, puzzle, sports, shooter, and role-playing. I realize that some games are hard to classify, but which ones are the clear winners?

Here's a good place to start: http://www.planetdreamcast.com/games/best/

If you see a game in this thread and on that list, chances are it's pretty darned good.

They've already been said but I'll give my votes as well.

Favorite RPG- Grandia 2 and Skies of Arcadia (they are both excellent, even ign couldn't recommend one over the other)

Favorite adventure- Sonic Adventure 2, I'd also put shenmue 1 and 2 in this catagory (maybe)

Favorite sports- Virtua Tennis 2k2

Favorite fighterSoul Calibur, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK (getting these 3 games will cost you probably $40, get them all they are the best, my personal fav is soul calibur).

Favorite misc game- Typing of the Dead, its worth it your friends will go nuts over it in laughter and fascination. It happens every time I show one of my friends they always say" wth?......this is awesome" You can also improve your typing skills with this game while having fun, seriously.

Keep in mind these are the games I like to play but my tastes seem to vary from other people, a lot of people have recommended many excellent games. Look at the games people have been mentioning, there definitely is a trend .

I forgot about Berserk: Guts' Revenge. I've seen it for around $15. Great arcade-type game, slashing through bad guys with your huge sword. Also very cool if you know anything about the anime or manga series. btw Zodd the Immortal (on hard) is one of the hardest bosses I've ever played in my life, as he should be.

IGN was being diplomatic. Although I thoroughly enjoyed Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia stomps all over it. Skies is truly a masterpiece.

Thus, be sure to play Grandia II first.
