L.A. Confidential TV series in development

CBS’ new take on L.A. Confidential has booked a big name to star.

Emmy nominee Walton Goggins (Justified) has signed on to headline the buzzy pilot, according to our sister site Variety. Goggins will play the role of Detective Jack Vincennes, the flashy and morally questionable LAPD cop played by Kevin Spacey in the Oscar-winning 1997 film.

Like the film, CBS’ L.A. Confidential — which scored an official pilot order earlier this month — is based on the novel by acclaimed crime author James Ellroy, and follows a trio of homicide detectives, a reporter and an aspiring actress as their lives intersect in 1950s Los Angeles. Jordan Harper (Gotham, The Mentalist) will pen the pilot and serve as an executive producer on the project, should it go to series.

Goggins is best known to TV fans as charming criminal Boyd Crowder on FX’s Justified, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination in 2011. He also memorably played detective Shane Vendrell on The Shield and transgender prostitute Venus Van Dam on Sons of Anarchy. Recently, Goggins co-starred on History’s Navy SEAL drama SIX and with Danny McBride on HBO’s Vice Principals.

Sense8 alum Brian J. Smith is set as a lead in CBS drama pilot L.A. Confidential, based on James Ellroy’s classic noir novel. It comes from Arnon Milchan, producer of the acclaimed 1997 L.A. Confidential movie; CBS TV Studios; New Regency; and Lionsgate TV.

Written by Harper and directed by Michael Dinner, L.A. Confidential follows three homicide detectives, a female reporter and a Hollywood actress whose paths intersect as the detectives pursue a sadistic serial killer among the secrets and lies of gritty, glamorous 1950s Los Angeles.

Smith will play Detective Ed Exley, the lead role played by Guy Pearce in the 1997 movie that earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Cold (though not without a conscience), obviously brilliant, authoritative and fiercely ambitious, Ed Exley is a uniformed L.A. cop when the pilot story begins. The son of Preston Exley, former hero detective-turned-real estate developer, he is determined to make his mark and to become a hero in his father’s eyes. Competing against the memory of his deceased brother, his father’s favorite, Ed will do anything to prove himself. He wants nothing more than to make detective and is single-minded in his pursuit. Smith joins Walton Goggins, who was cast as Det. Jack Vincennes this week.

Harper executive produces with Milchan, Dinner and Anna Fricke.

Smith played Will Gorski on Netflix’s sci-fi drama series Sense8, from Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski. His other TV credits include Defiance, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest and The Good Wife. Smith also earned a Tony nomination for playing the Gentleman Caller in the 2013 revival of The Glass Menagerie. He’ll next be seen in the feature 22 Chaser. Smith is repped by Innovative and Sanders Armstrong Caserta.

This is actually the 2nd attempt to do a TV show. The 1st starred a pre-24 Kiefer Sutherland.

It was filmed in 1999 for FOX and was never picked up, but later aired as a TV movie in 2003.

Sutherland played the role that Goggins was cast for. That Pilot is an extra on the LA Confidential DVD/BD.

Saw the pilot on my blu. Didn’t really care for it. Not sure if this will really translate into a TV series.

This was the last time CBS tried doing a period crime show.

Only lasted 1 season.

I'd be more excited about this if it wasn't CBS.

Sarah Jones signs on as the female lead.

She's playing the part that Kim Basinger played in the movie.

She was the female lead in the JJ Abrams show Alcatraz a few years ago for those who watched it.
