Emerald City (NBC) -- From Producer/Director Tarsem Singh -- Premieres 1/6/17

Swept up into the eye of a tornado, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) is transported to another world - a mystical land where an all-powerful ruler (Vincent D'Onofrio) governs over one kingdom, has outlawed magic, and faces not only the wrath of a growing cauldron of witches but a looming disaster brought on by a mythical force. Epic, romantic and fantastical, "Emerald City" is an empowering tale of a young woman finding her true strength and identity even as she battles to bring a divided world together.
1st full trailer was released today:
This is a re-telling of the Wizard of Oz story. It will be a 10 episode season.
Tarsem Singh produced and directed the entire season.
You could definitely see his influence. Trailer looks great. Looks like the most ambitious show NBC is attempting.

I think I'll wait for the consensus here before I dedicate 2 hours to this.

You'll enjoy it if you like Tarsem Singh's style mashed with NBC's multicultural sensibilities. Wizard of Oz purists won't find much to like about it.
This is definitely not for fans of Judy Garland's The Wizard of Oz. The main female character is named Dorothy. That is where the similarities end.

I read the Oz books when I was 10 and don't recall the hookers and blow.

I enjoyed it...forgot to set a season pass when this aired last night so I caught up using Comcast on demand and I was impressed with Adria Arjona. I see that she has not done a lot of work up to now, but she was solid and I hope she has a good role in the Pacific Rim Sequel.

I actually thought the second hour was stronger than the first hour, though I saw the twist coming with the child. I wonder if the child is meant to become the Beast?
My biggest concern is the casting of the Wizard himself, Vincent D'Onofrio. I hadn't seen him in much lately and he felt out of place in the cast.
Dorothy and the soldier had good chemistry.

I really liked it.
Thought it was a very fresh take on the Wizard of Oz story adding a darker element. Tarsem Singh's style was very present. I also liked that it added a steam punk element.
The actress who played Dorothy was pretty good IMO. I also liked the different take on the scarecrow.
at the new version of the Yellow brick road.

Their yellow brick road was hot garbage. It was cheap spray paint on dirt. It's like an NBC executive saw the dailies and realized Tarsem Singh had forgotten to include Oz's most iconic landmark.

Didn't they say in the episode the "Yellow" was from some kind of hallucinogenic plant? I saw Dorothy sniffed some of it and started to get a little "high"

Poppy dust. In the '39 movie, the field of flowers Dorothy, scarecrow, etc. run through are poppies. They start getting sleeply because they are getting high.

Is there a re-air of the premier?
NBC decided to block the channel from Dtv due to a dispute and it isn't on demand or as of yesterday not on NBC.com either.
