Kevin Can Wait (CBS) -- S: Kevin James -- Series Thread
"Pilot" - Kevin James stars as a newly retired police officer looking forward to spending carefree, quality time with his wife and three kids, only to find he faces tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets, on the series premiere of the new comedy KEVIN CAN WAIT, Monday, Sept. 19 (8:31-9:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network.
Kevin's retirement plans consist of chilling with his family and having epic adventures with fellow retirees Goody, his former partner and close friend, and Duffy, his oldest pal, as well as his brother, Kyle, a fireman whose closest encounter with a blaze would be a grease fire in the firehouse kitchen. However, Kevin's dream is jeopardized when he discovers that Donna, his wonderful wife of 20 years, has shielded him from key family info while he worked overtime protecting the community. Their usually reliable eldest, Kendra, is dropping out of college so she can support her unemployed fiancé, Chale, while he designs the next "big app"; his teenage daughter, Sara, has budding anger-management issues; and their youngest, Jack, is a bit of a hypochondriac. For now, his plans for a cushy life will have to wait, because Kevin has work to do, and this time, his family is his beat.
PRINCIPAL CAST INFORMATION:
ˇ Erinn Hayes as Donna
ˇ Gary Valentine as Kyle

yeah, but she doesn't seem to have any of the ballbusting craziness that Leah Remini had. She's seems like more of a According to Jim Courtney Thorne Smith wife. ( Not that I'll ever admit to watching either of those shows.)
If King Of Queens was a more honest show there would have been at least a dozen episodes with domestic violence disputes where the cops had to show up.

This is filmed on Long Island in a new studio, hoping to land some tix as its not far from where I live. That being said, it looks dumb.

This looks to be about as cookie-cutter as you can get. Don't see it lasting very long.

James last CBS show lasted 9 seasons.
This type of sitcom still has an audience even though it's loathed by the sophisticated comedians here at DVD Talk.

Good point. That being said, I still think BBT is awful! Never understood the draw to that show other than the obvious eye candy.
I like sitcoms, this just seems like every other we've watched since the 80's. Nothing to make it stick out like Modern Family (in its earlier years) and Blackish.

I was a huge King of Queens fan, but I am not expecting much from this.
The only way to succeed after a successful sitcom is to have a strong supporting cast.
Bob Newhart show was successful in the 70's and then Newhart was just as successful in the 80's because it had a great supporting cast which sort of made Newhart a secondary character.
If the show is pure Kevin James then I don't think it will succeed cause we've been there done that.

If by some miracle this new series is watchable, we can always catch up after the fact.

It wasn't anything new or exciting, pretty much exactly what we were expecting but I like Kevin James so this'll be a good background show to have on while I'm doing other things.
I did chuckle at a few lines. "Well, you do your thing. I'm just here to grab the mustard." Made me laugh.

I am a HUGE King of Queens fan- I still think its one of the most underrated sitcoms (at least when it was in its prime- the last few seasons were AWFUL).
So was really looking forward to this- and it was a huge disappointment. Since pilots are often the worst episode of a series, I am not dropping it yet, but I don't have high hopes.

He rolled out his two King of Queens pals again for a payday, that was disappointing.
The wife doesn't seem like the right casting.
The family casting was very weird.
This show stunk.

So he was 33 when King of Queens started and is 51 now? He's aged pretty well.

I love KoQ but I didn't think the commercials for this looked particularly funny. How long until Jerry Stiller makes a "guest appearance"?

This was exactly what I expected when I first saw the trailers. It's straight cookie cutter sitcom from the laugh track the family and house set up.
I have no idea if it will flop or run for 5+ season.
Either could happen being it's CBS and for whatever reason they seem to know how to keep a show on the air ratings wise. I'm not even sure it's a bad show as much as it's just the same basic dad+family in a house together sitcom networks have been cranking out for decades now.
it's not really interesting to me but again does anyone really want to bet against a CBS sitcom anymore? That network seems know it's market when it comes to stuff like this.
plus I can't throw too many stones from the glass house of a *sigh* series long Two and Half Men watcher. Oh the shame..
