The Eighties (CNN) -- 7-part series from EP Tom Hanks -- Premieres 3/31/16
Series Follows the Emmy-Nominated The Sixties and The Seventies
CNN will premiere the new seven-part documentary series, The Eighties, on Thursday, March 31, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. From EMMY® Award-winning producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman in association with HBO and EMMY® Award-winning producer Mark Herzog, The Eighties explores the individuals and events that shaped a decade of exceptionalism and excess. Through its use of rarely seen archival footage and interviews with journalists, historians, musicians and television artists as eyewitnesses to history, The Eighties will look at the age of Reagan, the AIDS crisis, the end of the Cold War, Wall Street corruption, the tech boom, and the expansion of television and the evolving music scene. The series launches with a two-hour episode on 80s television.

Set your DVRs for those interested. I watched both the Sixties and Seventies over the last 2 summers and they were fantastic. Looking forward to this one.

Thanks for the reminder. We watched the 70s last year and enjoyed it. Forgot there was a teaser for this at the time.

Wonder if it will be as good or better than the 80's the Decade Made Us on NGC.
Surprised they did not wait until Summer to air this.

I was surprised by that they didn't wait until the summer. I also wonder about his series vs. the NGC series, I think CNN might include a couple of topics that the NGC series didn't touch on. On a related note, I miss the VH1's I Love the 80s'/90's shows and I don't think they have been reaired in their entirety in several years. VH1 Classic was doing a "Best of I Love..." series a year or two ago.

It might be good but there have been so many 80's retrospective shows so most of it you probably already seen before.

Another show where they make all the 4:3 video from that era into 16:9 video somehow. Can't they just give us a true representation of what video looked like back then? Blown up SD video looks even worse than the original.

The one thing I miss about the days before cable dramas, Netflix, etc is shows that EVERYONE watched because we only had ABC, CBS and NBC.
There are so many great cable shows that I watch today and don't have anyone to talk about with (The Americans first comes to mind) the day after the Episode. Back then the masses were all talking about the great shows because it was only the Big 3 networks.
I still remember'Who shot JR' Episode as I was only 8 years but that's all anyone talked about that summer.

1st episode was excellent.
Covered pretty much everything about the explosion of TV in the 80's
Sitcoms
TV News
Entertainment News shows
Talk shows/Trash TV
1 hour dramas/soaps
and sports on TV
Really good stuff and lots of good interviews. Unlike now where there is such a dilution of viewers with so much content on different mediums, Primetime TV back then was appointment television with only 3 main networks.
Next week is only 1 hour. Covering the Aids crisis.

With so much focus on TV I'm surprised they didn't mention the VCR. I suppose that didn't come into play much until the second half of the decade, and was more a gateway for cinema into the home. With still 3 networks, recording TV probably wasn't a thing like I remember from the early/mid 90s.

My family got our first VCR in 1983 and I remember feeling like everyone else I knew already had one by then. So recording TV was definitely going on in the early '80s.

Saw an article about the ratings and apparently the 1st episode was the highest yet compared to The Sixties and Seventies over the last 2 summers.
Fully expecting a The Nineties miniseries for next year.

It was good though when it covered the boring CBS shows I zoned out.
That CNN promo banner for "Race to the White House" took out half the screen.
for using the Miami Vice series finale in the closing credits.
I hope they do a episode on just 80's movies.
Not that excited about the AIDS show.

I watched the first episode earlier tonight. I liked it and I was surprised that The Cosby Show and Cosby were mentioned. I liked that Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were mentioned. I don't think the NatGeo's shows ever focused on those shows in their retrospects. I remember NatGeo included Dallas and other primetime soaps.
I liked that SCTV and It's Gary Shandling's Show show were mentioned in this one.

The same with OJ, the guy still rushed 2,000 yards in a season and that shouldn't be forgotten even if he committed double murder.

Looks like CNN changed the airing order. Instead of the AIDS crisis on 4/7, they aired "The Reagan Revolution" instead talking about Reagan's 2 terms as President.
Next new episode isn't until 4/21 about the Berlin Wall being torn down.
I'm watching the Reagan episode right now. Not really into politics, so this topic only carries a moderate interest for me even though I grew up during his Presidency.

I liked Reagan and probably the only president I have liked during my lifetime but that episode was kind of boring and did not really give him a lot of credit for the good stuff he did.

Anyone know if and when they are going to air the last episode, about the Cold War? They preempted for coverage of Prince and I don't see it being repeated. Is it on demand?

This show got screwed because of the Prince breaking news.
I looked at the schedule and there's no re-air scheduled for "Tear down this wall" They are going straight to episode 4 "Video Killed the Radio Star" next week.
It does look like they are airing a marathon on May 7th.

However, that could change with breaking news too.

So only two episodes of this have actually aired, yeah? TV and Reagan? AIDS was pushed/delayed, and now the Berlin wall one.
