You're assuming it's going to be any good. After watching that trailer, I have no desire to watch this.

Not really too excited about it. I like Michelle Yeoh but from what little I'm seeing of her, she comes across a little stiff.

The budget looks nice, but the visuals overall make it feel like some generic Sci-Fi show, nothing too distinctive. I don't like the uniforms as they remind me of Star Trek: Enterprise.

I was surprised that the Klingons are the JJ Abrams design, but I guess I shouldn't have been. They too looked like some generic aliens.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery -- from EP Bryan Fuller -- Coming to CBS All-Access in 2017

CBS on Monday announced that the highly anticipated series will premiere on Sunday, Sept. 24th at 8:30 p.m. That same night, the two first episodes will be available to stream on CBS All Access, with subsequent episodes premiering exclusively on the streamer every Sunday.

However, the 15-episode first season of the sci-fi series will be split into two chapters. The first eight episodes will roll out through Nov. 5. The series will then return with seven new episodes in January 2018.

Sounds like more production delays. Although this will mean anyone wanting to binge the entire season on a free trial of CBS Access will have to wait until Feb/March 2018 to do so.

I'm still surprised CBS is going forward with locking this series on it's proprietary streaming service.

Maybe they're writing off the bootleggers as a lost cause?

They've already recouped the bulk of the costs by selling off the International rights to Netflix. The CBS CEO says they only need a very small number of CBS All Access subscribers to thus make it worthwhile. And pretty much every network and streaming services have written off a portion of the population that pirates. However, as Netflix shows, there's a very sizable portion of the population willing to pay for legit streaming if it's easy, readily accessible, and cheap enough. Whether they're willing to pay for another streaming service is another question.

CBS has renewed The Good Fight for another season, so at least that show seems to be drawing enough viewers to the subscription service.

Why do they refuse to do what I think everyone would really want and just finally give us a Star Trek the Third Generation, in the future hinted at in ST:TNG, may a few decades past that? Continuously trying to mine the time around the original series just seems dumb.

My theory is that CBS wants to capitalize on the popularity of the new movies, but since they don't have rights to it, they're placing it slightly before the timeline of the new movies so they don't interfere with any storylines they use for the films.

The three TNG series gave us 21 seasons, covering 15 years of events (2364-2379). TOS gave us three seasons of live action (plus 22 eps of animated) for the era around 2254-2269. There is a crap ton of history to be explored in that era. Why do you think there are novels and comics constantly printed in those eras? Why do you think the reboot movies stayed in that era?

"Jumping forward" like TNG did is the easy answer. You can just make up anything and say "it's been a hundred years".

Going back and filling in the blanks requires a little more thought and consideration. I wouldn't mind seeing the future jump at some point, but there's a lot from the TOS era that I would like to see explored first.

First look at Jason Isaacs

I thought he was going to be an alien.
Either way, that's cool that he's human and a member of Star Fleet.

He's actually captain of the Discovery. I wonder if he'll be British or American accent.

The biggest problem with going backwards in the Trek timeline is our own advancing technology.

TOS has a certain look and feel; it's very much a 1960s idea of the future, from the clothing to the design to the technology to the aliens and planets.

Right now, I'm typing this on an iPad. It's smaller, sleeker, faster, and more HD than all of the analog shit they had on TOS. If we do a new Trek series in that past, you either have them lugging around tricorders that look like 80s tape recorders, which would be a strange vision of two hundred years in the future to modern eyes, or you give them an early 21st cenrury vision of the future, which would clash with what we saw in TOS.

TOS looks awkward and clunky now... why are their communicators and tricorders separate pieces of hardware? They should have shit that blows my iPhone out of the water... but we accept that because we know it was made in the 1960s.

Enterprise took place before TOS and they managed to make the tech look more advanced. There weren't many complaints.

There were tons of complaints. You had to be on the right forums

I can understand why the series won't look like it was made in the 60's, but there are still design principles and aesthetics at work in TOS that are being complete ignored in what we've seen so far.

It is completely possible to do a bridge design that would like the TOS Enterprise in "feel" but still have modern design principles. Just smooth off the edges, make the "greeblies" more organic.

As for tricorders and pads, sure we have iPads and iPhones, but can they scan someone's DNA and diagnose an illness? You have to accept that the larger form factor is for all the extra things they can do.

I saw this picture and the first thing I thought was that he had a "mouse" in his right hand. And I was thinking what a kick ass gaming system those vessels must have and with that giant screen in the front of the ship, you know they are playing there all of the time.

Helmsman : "There's Klingons off the starboard bow, Captain. they're opening hailing frequencies."
Captain: "Just a min, I am almost done with this level of Mario Cart."
Science officer: "they're powering weapons, sir, I think we should answer their hail."
Captain: " 2 Seconds to the finish line if I don't hit a banana peel."

Frakes is pretty much hit or miss, so he's an unknown quantity.

He's as strong as the script is. And it's a TV show, so the directors aren't really the creative voice.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery -- from EP Bryan Fuller -- Coming to CBS All-Access in 2017

^^ Yup

Director's aren't really a big deal in TV. They just shoot the show as guided by the showrunner(s) They really have no creativity like feature directors.

Hiring Jonathan Frakes really doesn't mean anything. He's just a hired hand to get the script shot, and edited by the deadline.

It would be nice if they can get Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres) to direct too. She's done tons of TV shows.

I just found out she was married to Casey Biggs (Damar). I knew she was credited as Roxann Biggs-Dawson while on Voyager, but never made the Biggs connection.

The panel also revealed a pretty big spoiler about the main character if you care to seek it out.
