Humans (AMC) -- Series Thread -- Premieres 6/28/15

Penned by British writing partners Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley ("Spooks," Spooks: The Greater Good) and based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama "Real Humans," the series explores the emotional impact that comes as the lines between humans and machines become increasingly blurred. This bold new series is produced in conjunction with the UK's Channel 4 and Kudos, the makers of "Utopia" and "Broadchurch."

I have a feeling this show isn't going to do very well. There doesn't seem to be much buzz about it and it's competing against some monster competition tonight on HBO and TNT.

This show is great. The UK is 3 episodes ahead of the US. It feels like a cross between Almost Human and Black Mirror. Might be my favorite sci fi show out right now.

I am out after one episode. I wasn't aware it was mostly a British production before watching. I know many sci-fi fans fancy this concept of androids living alongside humans but the speculative subject bores me to tears. We are centuries away from this level of technology so I find it pointless for entertainment to place humanoid robots in our current society.

They had to mention the ideas virtually anyone that has ever skimmed the Robotics wikipedia could pick up- the singularity and Asimov's laws.

For a moment one could say in this present day things took a slightly different path and we created higher levels of tech faster. However that does not work as well when everything else is exactly what we are using today. It is something I noticed right away, current tech alongside something we will not hit for many decades.

Plus they have already been around for awhile as it is.

I liked the show and will continue to watch. The guy using the Synth sexually answered 1 question. How long before the teen age boy gets busy with Anita?

I enjoyed episode 1 and it reminded me a lot of Almost Human. Vera will probably be one of the big bads.

I liked it. I didn't know beforehand that William Hurt is in it, so that was a bonus.

While it does cover well-trod territory for sci-fi stories, I'm ok with that as long as it's entertaining and not insultingly stupid. So far, the writing, acting, and overall production values seem to be pretty good--better than, say, your typical Syfy fare.

This did pretty good on Sunday for AMC. 1.7M viewers and 0.5. Way better than what Turn or Halt and Catch Fire are doing.

I recorded it, so I'll check it out later on.

DVR ALERT!

I haven't watched it yet, but I noticed that the series recording on my DVR had no future episodes scheduled. I think this show might have the weird episode date problem because it aired in the UK first. So, if you have your series recordings set to "First Run Only" you might need to adjust to get all the episodes.

Oddly, the first episode recorded fine, but for some reason looks like the rest of the series is affected.

It was interesting enough that I will stick with it for a few more episodes. It was a bit weird and creepy, but that was it's intentions.

Huh, I was expecting better reactions. I usually hate entertainment like this because I do not believe AI will EVER happen, but I thought that this was exceptionally well done. I thought it was a truly fantastic first episode, I could care less that they used the singularity and Asimov stuff.

Having the whole world be future tech drastically increases the budget so I choose to not let that bother me, fully acknowledging I can be very selective in ignoring inconsistencies as I cannot get past the idiocy of Walking Dead as an example

I just saw this today. Didn't find it boring it all. I found the robot Anita very alluring. Was that ending real? Did she just pick up the daughter and walk out?

I'm guessing the intelligence of these robots will evolve to the point where they become a threat to their human owners. The Mom is already threatened by Anita.

I was on the fence with this show, but last nights episode was very good as I'm very intrigued to see where they go for the rest of the season. I do wonder if this is one of those shows that has an arc for only 1 season, and they essentially start from scratch for a season 2 if it gets picked up, but I have not seen any interviews so I could be wrong.

re: Humans (AMC) -- Series Thread -- Premieres 6/28/15

I thought this was an 8-episode miniseries?

I'm at episode 6, and I experienced my first moment where I was annoyed the characters acted stupidly, or the show went a predictable route. I'll spoiler since this hasn't aired in the US.

Spoiler:
When the father calls the police about the people at his house. The family should have brought him into the loop more, or should have known that he would do something stupid, as he has been doing the whole show. That was a slight annoyance, but an otherwise fantastic episode.

Here is a blurb I found after the first week it aired about its future:

Season 1 of Humans debuted on Channel 4 in the UK on June 14, 2015 and on the AMC channel in the US on June 28, 2015. AMC. The premiere episode of Humans drew only 1.73 million total viewers, which is not a very high number. So far, there have been no statements from AMC about the fate of a potential second season.

I LOL'd at the husband's explanation to his wife about why he had sex with Anita:

"It was an accident! Before I knew it... I... I..."

What? You tripped and your penis fell into her vagina?

I know this is not the focus of the show, but I would welcome more exploration of the economic impact of the synths on society.

For example, the daughter mentions that she questions the effort and value of pursuing a profession when they will probably just invent a synth to do it, and there are the protestors who see synths as job-stealers.

And just for the heck of it, here's a picture of Gemma Chan

Hope this gets renewed. It is pretty great. Being a co-production with BBC means it is probably pretty inexpensive to make. Really love it.
