It's kind of the nature of the show though. I figured they'd have to change direction. I mean, if they got too successful then they'd be Apple, and it would be totally re-writing history.
I like where they seem to be going with this, with the dawn of online gaming and chat rooms.

I thought the episode was a little disjointed too, like they had to make sure everyone got covered. I'd have preferred an episode just about Donna & Cameron, with the next one being more about Joe & Gordon. I loved seeing Bosworth at the end. That opening tracking shot was pretty sweet, too.

I was interested in this series when it premiered last year but the first episode didn't really hook me, and I wound up letting it pile up on my DVR and never finished the season. I may give it another chance though.

Glad I stuck with this show last season, because this season looks great.
I liked the premier ep, so many ways to go.
Why was the Bosworth in prison again?

Definitely disjointed and feels a tad rebooted. Based on how S1 ended and S2 began, it seems like they hedged their bets in case it wasn't renewed - like many shows do.
I'm not sure I care for Gordon's new problem - coke. Feels like his alcohol problem in S1, and drug thing's been done to death in other shows.
Joe's new chick is Angela Darmody from Boardwalk Empire. Haven't seen her since.

I always cut the first episode of any show's new season some slack simply because they have to establish where all of the characters are at in their lives. This was no different then most shows, as they were able to cover each character and you can sort of see where their motivations are at.
The interesting thing about this show is that I am not a big computer geek, as its really the characters that sell me on this show. And the fact that it takes place in the 1980's, so I can relate to all of the style changes, politics, music, etc.

My wife, on the other hand, isn't a computer geek at all. She's more of a music geek. It took her a couple episodes to get into the series, but she digs it now. She likes pointing out the songs she knows, and even pointed out one that was a very modern song (released in the last couple years) that I just assumed was another 80's track.
The Halt & Catch Fire producers put together Spotify playlists for the four main characters. Pretty much all the songs from the series are there, plus others that they would listen to. I'll try to find a link...
https://open.spotify.com/user/amc_halt_and_catch_fire
That will take you to their Spotify page where all the playlists are. They even have one for Joe's new girlfriend, Sara Wheeler.

I would have been irritated if the Lido Shuffle wasn't on Gordon's list
Good start to the season.

Wonder how long AMC will keep this show around.
The number of viewers is down 40-45% from last year's debut.

S1 Debut to S2 Debut doesn't matter as much as S1 Finale to S2 Debut and L+3/L+7 numbers.
S1 Finale to S2 Debut this is up 15%.
The series debut also had Mad Men as lead last year.

that's good news. I hope this season can sustain and/or grow in viewership.
There's a good article about the season premiere on Rolling Stone:

Re: Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 2 Thread of catching all the fire
The only thing that I disliked about S1 was that they repeatedly abbreviated the name "Digital Equipment Corporation" to "dee eee see". I worked there for a year and a half, and it was always "deck", both inside and outside the company. It was even used as a pun in emails and staff notices, like "All Hands on DEC Meeting this Tuesday" or "Luau on the DEC this Saturday". I wanted to rant about it online, but for all I know, people did call it "dee eee see" in the early 80s. If not, that's a big goof, worse than "ess see ess eye" for "scuzzy".
I liked the premiere. I can be very patient with this show. I liked the "reboot" aspect of this season so far. I do, however, find it hard to believe that NO ONE at Mutiny has brought up getting a proper office space, with a proper server room. Compare this to the home-brewed server farm in Silicon Valley. Sure, it's a different era, but I was alive and working with computers in both, and an online company in 1985 would still have been closer to what you see in Silicon Valley vs. the "well, two more XTs should fix it" in Halt and Catch Fire.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 2 Thread of catching all the fire
Season 2, Episode 2 - New Coke aired last night
Yesterday's episode was great. I love how they're just barely tapping into the "Chat room" culture that we all know (in real life) became huge. I also love the exchange they had with the "first user" of said chat room, and how Cameron was quick to dismiss it. I'm not sure I like the stuff with the hacker, as I'm already thinking that will have an "obvious" story arc... but we'll see.
I think Donna has become (over the course of the second half of last season, and these two new episodes) my favourite character.

This show has been heavily retooled, I barely recognize it as the same show from season one. The conflict between Cameron and Donna appears to be its central storyline this season. I've liked the stuff with Bosworth the most in season two.

Cameron and Bosworth's friendship is probably my favorite part of the show at this time. I'm assuming that the chat thing will take off sometime soon.

I still can't get over how completely different Gordon looks this season. He was such a 70's nerd last season and now he looks much more hip.

Just wait until his beard grows back.
I genuinely felt sorry for Bosworth. I love the character. I think he's the de facto "too old for this shit" guy, sure, but he's great. I hope he sticks around.

I don't like how shows/movies minimize the fashion of the 80s for the major characters. Joe and Cameron would definitely be wearing more trendy/hip fashions in 1985. You know they don't want to make the main characters look silly with baggy and wildly colourful clothes and ridiculous with big hair that's angular and gelled. If I didn't know what era the show was in, I'd have a tougher time figuring out that it's 1985 and not a later era.

God damn was the second episode good. I was geeking out when Gordon brought home all the Atari and Commodore equipment. Loving all the shit Joe is having to go through, he so deserves it.

I don't understand how building a "software pbx" would allow them to use fewer phone lines for a given number of modem connections. Each modem would still require a single channel on the incoming trunk line. Anyone understand what they were talking about?
