Yep I was in the same boat, I first saw it when I was about 19 and didn't really care for nor get it. But when I saw it again maybe 8 years after that I loved it. Great stuff all around. It's awesomely bizarre.
Alas it didn't quite set the critical world ablaze (31% on rottentomatoes), but then again that surprisingly boring piece of shit Boondock Saints still has a huge following and scored lower.

David Wain may be the most underrated director working today. I love his stuff, but it's always getting shitty reviews and audience feedback.

Role Models was his only real "crossover hit". I loved The State as a kid so I guess it shouldn't surprise me that I'm also a fan of his.

I love seeing H. Jon Benjamin in live action stuff. And Paul Rudd's entrance on the motorcycle is so perfect I can't stand it.
I've always loved The State - have my VHS tape of the show signed by the Stella cast. Can't wait for more!

The tone of the show is oddly more grounded than the original movie, more Role Models than the original WHAS. Still, really funny and while varying degrees of weight gain and aging have taken their obvious tolls, it just further proves that Paul Rudd does not age.
