Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

Consistently one of the best comedies on TV. I don't look up any period references because it really doesn't matter to me. Until they start pulling things from the early 70's or late 90's and calling it 80-something, I'm happy to just have it be how Adam remembers it.

I'm an Eagle fan and I would never have left the house on game day. But I understand how important those games were back then.

Liked the tie in to the modern day there at the end with Sirota

That was great. I also liked the photo of Adam and Grandpa at the end.

This is not the usual jumbled 80's timeline nitpick, but I don't remember those knit wool hats like Barry wore in the van (pointy with ear flaps) until recently, like in the last 10 years. Were those around back then?

That was good. Who is Sirota in real life? An actor, writer? Never heard of him before.

Political correspondent/blogger, writer and radio show host, he's been on Colbert a few times. He isn't super famous or anything like that.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

I know I've complained about the continuity\timelines in this show, but I really enjoyed tonight's tribute to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I really like that they explicitly copied one of the more famous goofs from the film:

Spoiler:
In the movie, when Cameron throws himself off the diving board, the chair he's sitting in falls in the water with him. But in the next shot, when Ferris dives in to save him, the chair is magically back on the diving board. In this episode, Barry throws himself off the diving board, taking the chair with him; when Beverly dives in to save him, the chair is back on the board!

It's just a small little touch, but you know they did that on purpose!

ETA: the original goof was noteworthy at the time, not because it was so obvious, but because it was the first "universal film goof" of my generation: freaks, geeks and jocks would talk about at school. But it wasn't something people debated or discussed in depth... it was... filler conversation, as in "wow... sorry your dad died... so, uh... hey, did you notice in Ferris Bueller when Cameron falls into the pool..." So it's really neat that The Goldbergs' crew remembered it and put it in their spoof. THAT'S someone who really grew up in the 80s!

I'm not a regular viewer of this show, but I did watch last night's Ferris episode and laughed more than I have at any other show I normally watch in a long time. Just very well done on all levels.

How great was it that they got Charlie Sheen to do the police station scene!!

They put a lot of time working in a lot of details and dialogue.

DirecTV and my local ABC channel are fighting over money, so I haven't been able to watch this show since early-to-mid January. It makes me sad to see that I'm missing so many great episodes!

The Ferris Bueller episode was just perfect. Loved the real footage of Adam's mom at the end doing the "go home, it's over!" line.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

I didn't think this episode was as good as The Goonies one but it made me crack up a lot. My favorite part probably being when the mom dived in the pool and said something like "let mommy's bussom be your life preserver!" Also, how awesome was it that they got Charlie Sheen for that.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

episode got a lot right and I enjoyed it, loved the Sheen cameo.

Also, I really like the fact that Adam Goldberg actually replies to comments about episodes of this show on various websites (ie: avclub). He sort of confirmed next season's tribute won't be BTTF and that nothing can top Community's paint ball episodes.

From what I heard, they'll be doing a take off of "The Lost Boys" soon.

At first I really didn't like this show, but it grew on me. But the "Ferris Bueller" episode was pretty good. A well done loving tribute & parody.

Oh man. Just caught the Ferris episode. That was beyond fantastic. Probably my favorite episode so far. Bev at the end and Charlie Sheen's cameo just killed me.

I was waiting and wondering..."are they gonna include that goof...?"

It wasn't that funny but it was definitely cool to see him there.

Overall, a great episode. I thought it was funny how Erica couldn't win especially at the payphone.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) - Season 2 Thread - premiering 9/24/14

This is the second highest rated sitcom on ABC and has a huge Live+3 and Live+7 boost, it's safer than Black-ish, The Middle, Fresh off the Boat, etc;

And ABC usually doesn't announce their pick-ups or cancellations until Upfronts. How to Get Away With Murder "unofficially" has a renewal because it showed a Season 2 preview during the finale.

I think this will be a no-brainer for renewal. They're getting more and more attention from celebrities and they're getting massive help with the music rights.
