Per forum rules we don't start episode threads until 24 hours before the show airs. That said, there's some good discussion here so I renamed it.

I had previously wondered about a 40th Anniversary special. Turns out there will be a three-hour event on February 15, 2015. No word yet on participants (obviously). Good to know when it's coming though.

So there will be a 40th anniversary special that comes 8 months before the actual 40th anniversary???
How is that even possible?

Sweeps, I assume. And being advertised like crazy two weeks before during Super Bowl XLIX on NBC. That probably figured into it as well.

At 6' 3" and 145 lbs... SNL hires 20 year old Pete Davidson...
Meet The Newest Member Of The ‘SNL’ Cast, Pete Davidson
BY JOSH KURP / 09.15.14
Since May, SNL has shed many of the anonymous members of its cast. John Milhiser, Noël Wells, and Brooks Wheelan are gone, and none will be particularly missed (unlike the forever-underused Nasim Pedrad, who left for a starring role on Mulaney). A 14-member cast, including Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che, seemed sufficient, but according to Deadline, Lorne Michaels has hired standup comedian Pete Davidson as a feature player. He’s 20 years old.
A native of Staten Island, NY, Davidson started his career in comedy at age 16, using it as a therapeutic outlet after losing his father, a New York City firefighter, on 9/11. Making his rounds in the New York comedy scene, he was spotted by Nick Cannon who took him under his wing. Davidson was a semi-regular on the revival of Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out improv comedy series on MTV2 last year, leading to a gig on [MTV2's] Guy Code. Davidson, who dropped out of college, made his film acting debut in Cannon’s direct-to-video School Dance. (Via)
Here’s his standup set on Jimmy Kimmel Live! from April.

He jokes about being ethnically 'miscellaneous' in that set, but that's probably why he got hired for SNL. Assuming he's any good, he could fit in a number of 'racial gaps' in the cast.

I still can't wrap my brain around why they decided to remove Strong from WU and kept Jost??!! Perhaps Jost is funny and a good writer, but his presentation is awful.

What the article does not mention is that Pete Davidson is taking over Mike O'Brien's spot on the cast. O'Brien will be going back to the writing only.
Fuck, the only three new members to survive the cut from last year are Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, and Sasheer Zamata.

6'3 145? Jesus. That's what I weighed when I graduated high school but I'm only 5'7 and I was still skinny as shit. I can't imagine being 8 inches taller and weighing the same.

That NBC can grab a Sunday night between the Super Bowl and the Grammys, and promo during the SB 50, is your explanation.

Bill Hader announced as host for one of the early season shows.
If only they can lure Wiig back for a revival of the "Secret Word" sketch.

Re: SNL Season 40 discussion (premieres 9/27/2014)
Surprised to see Mike O'Brien dropped. He showed potential.
Bill Hader and Nasim have been making the talk show rounds discussing skits that were dropped and they sounded way funnier than half the stuff that makes it air.
Bill had a skit with Dana Carvey based around Kasey Kasem and his son. Nasim was on Conan and they showed her playing Aziz Ansari in a killer impression that should have found a way into the show. Opportunity lost.
The bit with Aziz starts at 1:25

I am 5"8 and 148 lbs
I wish they did that Casey Kasem sketch.
There was a chance Hader would stay on SNL but he moved to Los Angeles to be with his wifeand wanted to commute to NY but Lorne was not happy about that.

They did!
Darrell Hammond Rejoins ‘Saturday Night Live’ As Announcer
The new “voice” of “Saturday Night Live” is going to have a familiar tone.
Darrell Hammond, the versatile impressionist who held forth on the program between 1995 and 2009 – the longest tenure of any cast member on the show – will return to the venerable program as its announcer, NBC said Thursday morning. He will replace Don Pardo, the program’s longtime announcer who passed away in August.
News of the hire was reported previously by USA Today and The New York Times.
Hammond has some familiarity with his new duties. He has at times quietly substituted for Pardo when he had voice problems, according to the two outlets’ reports.
“SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels told USA Today that Hammond would not replicate Pardo’s voice, but would come up with his own take on the role. “I just knew it wouldn’t be anybody who sounded like Don or replicated him,” Michaels told the media outlet. “It can’t be what it was, but it could sort of be in the same tradition. And it will be nice to have Darrell around. He understands the show and will probably be helpful in ways we haven’t yet figured out.”

Jim Carrey is also slated to host but no exact date given. It will probably coincide with the release of Dumb and Dumber To which opens Nov. 14th.
BTW, good prediction Goldberg!
