I would hope they dye her hair for the role. A quick perusal of Google Images doesn't reveal any blonde roles, though she's had red highlights in a few shots.

I think hair color is the least important aspect of the actress (or character). Amell and Gustin look nothing like their comic book counterparts, and are (IMO) both knocking it out of the park.

A network changes that brand at their peril.

Good looking girl playing Supergirl but I haven't seen her in anything either. Her being a brunette doesn't really bother me but hair can easily be dyed. Not sure about this being on CBS though.

Barely two seasons on a CW show and in a flop movie from 1984 that nobody remembers...
There is no brand. The Flash has had more exposure than Supergirl. If they made her a brunette or a redhead, nobody would care except self-righteous comics nerds.
A network changes that brand at their peril.

Besides Glee and the leaks, she also had a very brief appearance in Season 1 of Homeland, as a prospective harem girl getting "examined" by this random Arab guy's staff.

It's the same argument in the Justice League movie thread claiming the general public doesn't know anyone but Batman and Superman. These characters exist outside of typical storytelling mediums. They are a brand and and more people are aware than internet nerds like to think.
So yeah, stick with what people know... blonde.

Yeah, I like my Supergirl blonde. I have a feeling they'll dye it or at least lighten it before she shoots.

"Yeah I was gonna watch the new Supergirl, but she's a brunette... PASS," said the middle-aged Soccer Mom in Batavia.

The truth of the matter is that hair color is far more important for female characters than male characters on television. Some men will literally only date women with a specific color, be it redhead or brunette or whatever.
I am not saying anything against this casting, it could turn out fantastic. I didn't post them but the Supergirl audition tapes for a couple of different characters leaked out on YouTube last week. CBS had them pulled.

This hair color thing is silly. Actresses die their hair all the time (this actress has been blonde before).

both hair colors will be used. blonde for supergirl, brunette for regular (disguised) girl. like how superman parts his hair one way as clark and the other as superman.

Someone posted this over on SHH, so I have to assume they plan to stick with the blonde hair

If hair color is a big issue... then....
Mehcad Brooks Cast In CBS’ ‘Supergirl’ As Melissa Benoist’s Love Interest
JANUARY 28, 2015 | 05:45PM PT
Elizabeth Wagmeister
Days after CBS found its “Supergirl” in actress Melissa Benoist, she has found her love interest. Mehcad Brooks has joined the cast, as James “Jimmy” Olsen, Variety has confirmed.
Jimmy, based on the DC Comics character, is an attractive photographer at CatCo, the media company where Kara Zor-El works, as an assistant to Cat Grant, (yet to be casted). Recently, Jimmy has been living and working in National City, though the reason is still a secret.
In the “Superman” comics, Jimmy was close friends with Lois Lane and Kara’s cousin, Clark Kent.
“Supergirl” is exec produced by Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”) and Ali Adler (“Glee,” “The New Normal”), and hails from Berlanti Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television. Berlanti and Adler penned the hourlong pilot.
Brooks, best known for “Necessary Roughness,” “True Blood” and “Desperate Housewives,” is repped by The Gersh Agency.
