They knew this casting info would hit the net, it was meant to reassure the Net that this series would be about the "real" Supergirl, Superman's cousin. So thankfully we won't have to deal with any of the weird permutations like when the character was an angel from another dimension or a blob of protoplasm that shaped itself like Supergirl. That is not a joke, look it up.
Everyone knows Supes is supposed to be 6'4", though actual height can usually be hidden in most shots. I doubt he ever appears as anything but Clark Kent much.

I think the best thing DiDio ever did at DC was to bring back the Kryptonian Supergirl. I liked the Matrix Supergirl but man, did she become over-complicated during David's run. Simplified as Superman's cousin works perfect and it's all a non-comic audience needs to know.

Why, you don't like the elegant simplicity of "She was an artificial life form created in a Pocket Universe that resulted in the Time Trapper snatching a moment from the prime universe's past to create a fake Superboy, which then was destroyed and she came to the prime universe where she merged with an angelic being and hey where is all the vagina going?"

They tried really hard to make Crisis last. Superman being the only survivor of Krypton, and no Superboy, meant drastic changes to the Legion, no more super cousin or super pets, drastic changes to Power Girl (if you want to see a mess, see her continuity), etc. He was also depowered. Then slowly but surely you saw that all crumble away; maybe Krypton wasn't as Byrne depicted it, maybe we can reintroduce Krypto and Supergirl and other Kryptonians (heck, a whole city full of them), maybe there's still other universes, and heck lets bring back Barry Allen while we're at it, and give Superman god-like super powers again. That's what you get with work for hire, the people in charge are going to change, fondly remember the superheroes of their youth, and basically fanfic it back to what they fondly remember.

It was Peter David that ran with the un-Supergirl version for so many years, wasn't it? I wonder if he was behind it or someone higher up blocking changes.
Things did seem to loosen up for DC when Paul Levitz became president in 2002.

At the end of Peter David's run, he reintroduces the pre-crisis Supergirl (briefly) so I doubt he was behind blocking it, any more than Waid was with Barry Allen (which was also teased). I just think the higher ups wanted to keep the changes Crisis made intact, which I think was a good decision because otherwise, you end up with countless resets (which is what ended up happening with Zero Hour, etc.)
Infinite Crisis was the real slap in the face: undoing the one-universe concept, undoing the "happy" ending for the Crisis survivors and turning one of them into a super villain, complete with "retcon punch."
But yeah, Supergirl.

CBS’ “Supergirl” pilot has added “Super” veterans Dean Cain and Helen Slater to its cast in top-secret roles, Variety has confirmed.
Slater starred as Kara, the titular heroine in 1984’s “Supergirl” movie (to be played in the CBS pilot by Melissa Benoist), while Cain portrayed the Man of Steel/Clark Kent in ABC’s “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” Both guest-starred on Superman origin series “Smallville,” with Slater appearing as Clark’s Kryptonian birth mother Lara, and Cain playing Dr. Curtis Knox.
Details on their “Supergirl” roles were not announced, but they join a cast that also includes Laura Benanti, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, Calista Flockhart and Mechad Brooks.

Probably cast as Zor-El and Alura.
EDIT TO ADD: Oh wait! Laura Benanti is cast as Alura. Then I have no idea! Maybe random coffee patrons #1 and 2?

I knew Helen Slater would get a token role at the very least. Hopefully this show shames WB in releasing Supergirl: The Movie on Blu-ray.

There's 3 cuts. Theatrical (105 minutes), International (124 minutes) and Director's Cut (138 minutes). The Theatrical version has never been on DVD.

Very traditional style though aside from the colors. That's surprising.
