Re: Tyrant (S1E10) -- Season Finale -- "Gone Fishing" -- 8/26/14

I'm still unsure about this show. The ending didn't surprise me, given this is the same creative team behind a show where the main protagonist plot line was stretched out for 3 seasons beyond all reasonable logic. The best move would have been to off Barry and his family, and then go from there should it be renewed.

We'll see what happens. If anything I hope it gets renewed so Moran Atias is on TV on a regular basis

Re: Tyrant (S1E10) -- Season Finale -- "Gone Fishing" -- 8/26/14

Just finished the finale tonight. Yeah Howard Gordon and his co-writer wrote themselves into a huge hole. I'd like to see how they can write Barry out of that scenario in a way that makes any sense. That was probably one of the worst planned coups. Barry trusted a bunch of people he shouldn't have & didn't know well enough including Hakim. The guy was away from the country for 20+ years and he thought he could plan a coup to overthrow his brother?

The scene with the daughter and Aunt at the cafe was a waste of time. That was just a convenient excuse to have them miss their flight and find out Barry's fate.

If FX cancels the show, I'll just pretend Barry got hung or died in a firing squad like Hakim.

I noticed as the season progressed, they focused more on Jamal and the political elements and less on Barry and his family. In a way, that was probably setting up Jamal as the second Tyrant. Barry just didn't fit as a Tyrant.

Ecept of course Barry becoming a Tyrant is the point of the show.

To me, a conclusion with Barry assuming Jamal's Presidency would have been the only thing that elevated this show to "must watch" for season 2. It was a pretty marginal season 1, but I wouldn't have necessarily seen that coming and it would have been a great payoff with interesting possibilities going forward. Of course that seemed like the direction they were going the last few episodes, but they backed down at the end. Not as satisfying a conclusion, at all.

I suspect a lot of the elements would have been tweaked if the producers were given a second chance to re-do the series.

Bassam lives!

It wasn't a perfect first season, but has potential. Hopefully they work out the kinks. I'm looking forward to seeing how absurd they write Bassam out of that mess.

Surprised. Hopefully it improves because there is so much potential with this show.

Meh, I guess I'll watch it but I would of preferred to give something new a shot instead.

Something new? It's a rookie show that's getting a sophomore season.

Sons of Anarchy will be over for good by December. That is the one huge timeslot that FX will need to fill for Fall 2015.

I have mixed emotions about this coming back. Hopefully the writers realize that Jamal is the true star of the show and they get rid of Bassam early on.

FX likely invested a decent amount in the set pieces and locations for this show, so I can understand the decision to renew. Maybe an initial draft of the S2 arc won over the FX brass as well. Who knows.

AMC renewed Halt and Catch Fire to similar reaction so it must be the season for upsets.

Supposedly 1 episode of the show cost between $3-3.5M. That would include all the sets and locations. That's a lot of money for a basic cable series. I have to believe the costs along with a good season 2 pitch by Howard Gordon won them over for a 2nd season. Plus, the show does air internationally, so that's some extra cash in FOX's pocket.

SHOCKED! This show really didn't warrant a renewal based on its rather dismal first season, but I'm kind of glad to see it get another go with the hope that some major changes occur. In my opinion? Focus MORE on the screwed up family dynamics and let the politics be more secondary. Also, speed things up a bit, build more on crime and mystery, add on a couple of subplots and various characters to blend with the main narrative, and make Jamal and Leila more key players.

A little surprised, I'm not sure the ratings justified its renewal. Someone at FX must believe in the series, though a 13-episode commitment sounds scary.

I probably would not have renewed Tyrant. It had bad patches and that climax was atrocious. The Killing never recovered from its unresolved first season cliffhanger, fans left in droves.

If FX renewed this and skips on You're the Worst, I'm going to fucking go Jihad on them.

Glad this is coming back but I suspect the plot to undo Barry's predicament might be stupider and more convoluted than his failed revolution attempt.

If I remember there were 2 showrunners and 1 wanted it to be more like you are suggesting, more of a middle eastern Dallas, the other wanted more of a homeland vibe. Homeland won, but that battle might have lad to the poor focus the first season had.

They will undo that situation within the first ten minutes of episode one, restoring the formula established in season one.

The co-creator of the show, Gideon Raff, was the one who wanted to make Tyrant more of a soap opera. He left the show due to creative differences. Howard Gordon then became sole showrunner and made it more of a political drama.

No shit, and I would of preferred trying a new show instead of a second season of this.
