Re: Ash vs. Evil Dead (Starz) -- Series Thread -- premieres 10/31/2015

I just got the new Army of Darkness Blu-Ray set so I have time to watch the trilogy before the show airs. I have high hopes for this as TV just isn't the same when Bruce Campbell isn't on a show.

Is anyone else disturbed that Bruce Campbell is apparently turning into Mitt Romney?

Starz has already reviewed it for a second season. That's cool, but Starz also has a history of reviewing shows for a second season early, then never having a third season.

You're right about Starz, but two seasons is better than one season.

My friend just texted me saying that they're doing an Ash vs Evil Dead premiere at the Mann's Chinese theater in Hollywood and Iggy Pop is playing live on stage in the street. My friend works in that area.

What's funny is that the only DVD version I ever bought was the R3 Hong Kong release. Somehow I managed to avoid the dozen or so US and UK releases.

I've been talked into busting out the old projector and doing an outdoor screening of the show on Halloween night (weather permitting). I'll probably screen Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness first.

I wonder if Starz sees an actual bump in subscribers. I know I have to call the cable company by Friday to subscribe. I haven't had Starz since I lived with my parents 10+ years ago. They at least have my membership for a few months. Only because of this show.

I'll check this out as I work for a cable company and get Starz as part of my package. I'm excited for it but I am a bit surprised that it wound up on Starz. I would have thought it would be on HBO or possibly Cinemax as they have a better track record with original programming.

Yeah, their second season "renewals" are mostly a sham. They basically commit to a certain number of episodes ahead of time and then will see if the show swims or sinks. They try to milk a little publicity by going through with a public renewal announcement.

Do they basically show a set number of episodes, and if it's a bit say that ones that are already shot have been picked up because it was renewed?

A lot of these smaller cable players can't sink big budgets into multiple shows, so they are now produced with the intention of giving them every chance to find an audience over two seasons. You see it a lot with genre shows that have specialized sets.

Looks like this is available in Canada on "Super Channel", except that my cable provider has this as a package of 4 HD channels for $15/month. No thanks.

Re: Ash vs. Evil Dead (Starz) -- Season 1 Thread -- premieres 10/31/2015

Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness are all available on Starz Play and On demand and will be airing several times if any of you would like to record/watch them before the show.

Of course that's if you don't already own the DVDs/BDs.

I just started watching some of Evil Dead on Starz Play and man, it's super dated. I guess a $375K budget from 1981 doesn't hold up very well.

Ugh. Starz needs to join Sling TV so I can replace EPIX for $5/month.

Yup, I got it too. I know there was a preview of the show scheduled for after the Evil Dead marathon they have planned for Friday, but I thought the premiere wasn't till Saturday night.

We got a pretty cool promo for this at work today. It's a microfiber cloth.

I still like the first film. It's got that low budget 80s horror charm to it and is a fun watch.

Raimi is pretty game on the DVD commentary about it, joking about the obvious flaws. it's not like he was ever aiming to make high art or anything. It's dated, but the relentless tone and kinetic style still have a nice kick. For a 16mm splatterfest made for someone's credit card limit, it holds up fairly well. And it's just really fun.

Hoping to watch 1 and 2 tonight and AoD and the remake tomorrow before watching the premiere. At first I was just worried about re-watching the trilogy, but then I figured, you never know, they could tie something in from the remake.

They're playing on Starz in order leading up to the premier.
