Hap and Leonard (Sundance) - S: Purefoy, Williams

I was peeved that "Cold in July" was only screening locally for a week and I missed it. I'd imagine that if this tv show becomes a reality it will be shown in the UK.
The Hap and Leonard series centers on two kind hearted and hard hitting best friends who live in Texas, Hap Collins and Leonard Pine. Hap is a highly trained martial artist whose morality and sense of fairness often gets him in trouble with the criminal element he frequently comes into contact with. Leonard Pine, an African American homosexual ex-Navy Seal, is often along for the ride to keep Hap out of trouble. Hap and Leonard have been the stars of eight novels, two novellas, and a book of stories and excerpts, so Mickle and Damici will have plenty of material to choose from. The settings, scathing humor, themes of justice and fairness, and spot on characterizations will appeal to fans who have grown to love FX’s Justified.
In view of the book and movie connections, I was toying with the idea as to whether to post this in Book Talk (there is a Book Talk!) or Movie Talk... [EDIT: maybe I should've posted in one of those other two places ]

re: Hap and Leonard (Sundance) - S: Purefoy, Williams

"Hap and Leonard," featuring James Purefoy ("Rome," "The Following"), Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire," "Boardwalk Empire") and Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men"), will premiere Wednesday, March 2nd at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. Set in the late 1980s, "Hap and Leonard" is a darkly comic swamp noir story of two best friends, one femme fatale, a crew of washed-up revolutionaries, a pair of murderous psycho-killers, some lost loot and the fuzz. Based on the novels by Joe Lansdale, the six-hour series event follows Hap Collins (Purefoy), an East Texas white boy with a weakness for Southern women, and Leonard Pine (Williams), a gay, black Vietnam vet with a hot temper. When Hap's seductive ex-wife Trudy (Hendricks) resurfaces with a deal they can't refuse, a simple get-rich-quick scheme snowballs into bloody mayhem. Chock full of eccentric characters, "Hap and Leonard" provides a country twist on the classic mystery thriller. Produced by AMC Studios, the six-episode event series was developed by director/writer Jim Mickle (Cold in July, We Are What We Are and Stakeland) and writer Nick Damici (Cold in July, We Are What We Are and Stakeland). The project is executive produced by Jim Mickle, Nick Damici, Jeremy Platt and Nick Shumaker, along with co-executive producers Joe Lansdale, Linda Moran and Lowell Northrop. This project marks Mickle's and Damici's second major collaboration with Lansdale, as the pair previously collaborated on the film adaptation of Lansdale's novel Cold in July, which was selected to premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Additional "Hap and Leonard" cast members include Jimmi Simpson ("House of Cards"), Bill Sage (American Psycho), Pollyanna McIntosh, Neil Sandilands and Jeff Pope.

PRINCIPAL CAST INFORMATION:
· Bill Sage as Howard

I'll definitely be tuning in.

Lansdale's H&L books are really great, and I really hope it translates well to the screen.

Would love to see this but I don't have Sundance HD. Looks like I'll have to wait for a blu-ray release or netflix.

Yes, I've been meaning to catch up on those. I read one a while back, but owe it to myself to start from the beginning.

For those with Dish, Sundance has a free preview for the month of March.

I thought this was pretty good. I'll check out the rest of the season, especially since it is short.

Hap and Leonard Series Thread

Anyone watching this series?

James Purefoy (The Following) and Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire, Wire) star in a very Justified-like noir series on SundanceTV. I think AMC might also be airing it in some markets. Christina Hendricks (Internet Gifs, Madmen) and Jimmi Simpson (Breakout Kings, House of Cards) hace supporting roles.

It's a six episode series with tons of humor, violence, and wtf moments. It's my top pick for best new series so far this year.

Saw the commercials before the premiere, forgot to record it. Stupid DirecTV having Sundance in the 500s annoys me. I always forget about it.

All 3 episodes that aired are on demand. And I think there's a few re-airs this week.

If you're enjoying "Hap and Leonard" you might want to check out the film "Cold in July", currently playing now and again on some of the Showtime channels. It's directed by Jim Mickle, written by Mickle and Nick Damici, and adapts another story by Joe R Lansdale.

re: Hap and Leonard (Sundance) - S: Purefoy, Williams

Watched the 1st 3 episodes yesterday. I kind of like it so far. Very much a black comedy mixed with a crime thriller element.

Didn't realize that Leonard was gay until the scene where he was banging Raoul. (I didn't read the synopsis in the earlier post)

Who is Jimmi Simpson and his psycho girlfriend supposed to be? They're after the money I presume?

Not surprised at all that Hap and Leonard got double crossed in the latest episode.

They kinda cued us in on Leonard's sexuality after his uncle went on his F* rant. Then Hap getting in his face about it.

That woman is beyond epic. Easily the best villain duo I've seen in years.

Well that was crazy. I really wish this was on a channel people actually watch because this show is great.

Yeah, the 5th ep. was crazy. I knew that bitch would take off and the money might just be in VW. I think they made up the story about taking only 5K out of the stash. They had it on them the whole time.

Burned through 5 episodes. I have to say I really enjoyed it.

They did a great job on giving it the feel of a Lansdale novel (although I've never read a Hap & Leonard novel).

I hate to be "that guy", -but the final shot of the final episode was so dark (I watched it several times) that I'm not sure I get it. Could someone explain (in spoilers, of course).

Spoiler:
There is the skeleton of a child in the basement of Uncle Chester's house.

This sets up the events of the second Hap and Leonard novel "Mucho Mojo."
