Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
In my opinion True Detective should have really been classified as a mini-series. Even though it's ongoing the cast and settings will change so it's only a full series in name. I'm hoping Breaking Bad cleans up with it's last chance, but I can't say I'd be disappointed if True Detective took some wins. Also, how the hell is Orange is the New Black a comedy? If anything it feels like a drama with some black comedy elements but definitely not a full on comedy.

The line gets thinner every year with Dramedy shows. Scrubs was framed as a sitcom but had more gut punch moments than most dramas. House always worked better as a comedy for me.
The tone of Orange is the New Black is very lite for the most part, which may have a lot to do with it.

Totally disagree. Like I said it has some black comedy elements to it but overall the tone of the series feels a lot more like a drama to me.

I think I just realized this is the first time I've ever been interested in Emmy nominations. I usually only watch the Oscars, but there's just so much stuff that I enjoy now it's hard not to have some interest.

Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
I just looked at the Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Special Category - usually a throw-away category if there is one amongst the acting awards. :
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A TV MINISERIES OR MOVIE
Frances Conroy, American Horror Story: Coven
Kathy Bates, American Horror Story: Coven
Angela Bassett, American Horror Story: Coven
Allison Tolman, Fargo
Ellen Burstyn, Flowers in the Attic
Julia Roberts, The Normal Heart
Poor Allison Tolman -- no way is she really a supporting actress on Fargo - she has by far the biggest part on the show and now she's shuffled into a category that has her (a previously unknown actress) competing against three Best Actress Oscar winners (and another Best Actress Oscar nominee). I think she'd have had a better shot in the Best Actress category.

I was shocked and disappointed that Tatiana Maslany was not nominated last year for her acting work. But everybody makes mistakes.
I absolutely cannot fucking believe they left her out in the cold again this year.
No excuse for that.

Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
Regarding Treme, I read a post on another forum which said that a series must have 6 or more episodes in a season to qualify for "Best Series" -- and since Treme S4 had only 5 episodes, it couldn't qualify.
Sure seems like there are lots and lots of rules and loopholes shows are using to maximum advantage these days (series vs. miniseries, lead vs. supporting vs. guest actor/actress).

I suppose it could be said that with such a wealth of great television this season that there were bound to be blatant snubs, but Hannibal not netting a single nomination is high-test bullshit.

Last year, Bobby Cannavale gives a cartoonish performance as an intense but stereotypical Mafia thug and wins the Emmy, this season Jeffery Wright give one of the most intelligent sophisticated, nuanced performances I've ever seen for a TV villain, raising all sort of questions about race relations, and somehow doesn't get a nomination. Weird.

It's up to the studios to submit their shows or actors/actresses in whatever category they want. The Emmy people don't choose if someone is a supporting or guest actor, or if something is a miniseries or a drama it's the studios.

Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
Regarding all the nomination confusion, there is a ton of studio politics and manipulation from the actor's agents, and the actors themselves probably. HBO hasn't won a Best Drama Emmy in a while and I guess they felt Game of Thrones wasn't going to get it so they submitted True Detective and got the nom. The various Supporting/Guest Actor/Actress nominations is also designed to increase the chances of getting a win. In theory, someone who is in the main credits shouldn't be in the Guest category but you have that happening now with the ONITB ladies.

Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
I would kind of agree. I found Wright's performance to be one of the weaker elements of the season. I think Michael K. Williams work is far superior.

Re: 2014 Emmy Discussion Thread
Well I don't. I thought Wright was awesome and brought a very different element to a show that needed it. He's certainly better than most of the main characters on the show and definitely better than THE main character.

I don't like Boardwalk Empire and agree with its snubbing. It's a show that should have been fantastic and engrossing and simply isn't.

Who does everyone think will win Best Actor in Drama tonight? I guess I'll go with Cranston, but Matthew M. will probably take it.

I think it'll be MM too but kinda hoping Cranston wins one last time and Breaking Bad takes Best Drama. It's been a year so who knows how fresh it'll be in voters minds.

Then again, Emmy voters are about two or three seasons behind the rest of us (meaning they seem to reward people who should have won two years back), so who knows...Downton Abbey could sweep with these people.

So far so predictable with the winnings. I am rooting for Breaking Bad! But I am expecting some other show to win.
