Re: True Detective (HBO) -- Season 2 News, Rumors
As an aside: Before everybody gets pissed next year at season 2 for not being as gloomy, let us reiterate that it has been stated that it won't be as dark as season 1:

Re: True Detective (HBO) -- Season 2 News, Rumors
I like the Farrell casting - while he's been in some terrible films and sleepwalked his way through others, he's been pretty great in a few roles and seems to be maturing fairly well. I've never been a big Vince Vaughn fan, but he's pretty natural at playing the puffy eyed, sleaze ball type character that I'm guessing will be pretty close to his role here.

Seems like its McAdams' to lose... Very pleased if she agrees.

Rachel McAdams is said to be locking down the female lead role in season two of HBO’s “True Detective.”
Sources tell Variety HBO has offered McAdams the part opposite Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. Taylor Kitsch is also expected to land the role of the fourth lead.
Several other actresses have been considered for the part, including Jessica Biel and Malin Ackerman, but McAdams has been seen as the frontrunner for the past few weeks. HBO could not immediately be reached for comment.
Helmer Justin Lin is set to direct the first two episodes of season two. “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto has been busy writing the second season, which is set in California and revolves around three police officers and a career criminal who navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.
McAdams and Kitsch are expected to play cops alongside Farrell, while Vaughn plays the crime boss whose empire is threatened when his partner is murdered.
McAdams, repped by WME and Magnolia Entertainment, is already set to have a busy 2015 with the untitled Cameron Crowe pic and the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing pic “Southpaw” both bowing next year. She was most recently seen opposite Phillip Seymour Hoffman in “A Most Wanted Man.”

From an AdWeek interview with Taylor Kitsch
You’ve got True Detective coming up?
[Nodding] Mm-hmm. (For the record from sources involved in the negotiations: the deal is close, but not complete.)
It’s a great show.
Yeah, I’m really excited. I’ve just been prepping. It’s been almost a full year since I’ve been on camera, so I’m itching, man. I’m overdue. You’ve just got to grind it out. Even taking this year off was, I mean you want to work, but you also don’t want to just water it down and work for the sake of working. So, it was tough to sit a year out, keeping a finger crossed that I was going to get True.
I like him. I think he'll be a great addition.

The casting process for season 2 has been so long and drawn out. I don't think this airs on HBO until next August at the earliest.

With all of the hype surrounding this show and the limited commitment involved, one would think that this would be a snap to cast.

Can't really be that excited about this when you're going from the acting powerhouse pair of Woody and Matty Mac to this cast

With McAdams involved I can only assume the second season will involve some sort of whimsical time traveling love story.

Re: True Detective (HBO) -- Season 2 News, Rumors
With three of its four leads in place (and the fourth said to be near a deal), HBO’s True Detective has moved on to casting some heavily recurring roles for Season 2.
As previously reported, Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers) will play Frank Semyon, a career criminal struggling to move into legitimate enterprise, and Colin Farrell (Alexander) will play Ray Velcoro, a police detective with torn allegiances. Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) is said to be playing a detective, while Rachel McAdams is rumored to be circling the fourth and final lead role, as another detective.

In addition, all said to be near deals, per our sister site Deadline, are Abigail Spencer (Rectify), Kelly Reilly (Black Box), Michael Irby (The Unit) and Leven Rambin (The Hunger Games).
Irby would play Elvis, the partner of McAdams’ character, Spencer is believed to be playing the survivor of a sexual assault and Rambin a beauty with a checkered past. Reilly’s role is described by Deadline as “the self-possessed Morgan.”
Season 2 of the acclaimed drama begins shooting later this year.
I like all these actors, so very nice.

McAdams and Taylor Kitsch are officially confirmed by HBO as regulars. Kelly Reilly is also part of the regular cast.
The eight-episode second season of the Nic Pizzolatto crime drama revolves around three police officers (Farrell, Kitsch and McAdams) and a career criminal (Vaughn) who must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder. Here are the official descriptions for Kirsch, McAdams and Reilly’s characters.
Rachel McAdams as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.
Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.
Kelly Reilly as Jordan, Frank Semyon’s (Vaughn) wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.
In addition to the five regulars, True Detective has cast a slew of recurring players for Season 2, including Michael Irby, Abigail Spencer , Leven Rambin, Riley Smith, Lolita Davidovich, James Frain, Adria Arjona, Chrsitian Campbell, Michael Hyatt and Yara Martinez

It really feels like they're dragging their feet on this. This couldn't possibly debut until next Fall at the earliest.

I think it airs next August. HBO filming schedules aren't as rushed as networks. I think they will take 5-6 months to film the 8 episodes.

The cast this season is good but for some reason I'm not as excited about it in all honesty. I think the first season is going to be really hard to top and while there are some big names this year none of them have me as excited as I was about Harrleson or McConaughey.

I feel the same way. I don't see how this could live up to first season, especially with a less interesting cast/director. I was also disappointed to read that season 2 won't be as serious as the first, but... who knows. Maybe if the second season is different enough, we won't be constantly comparing it to the first.
