Re: Dave Letterman announces he will retire (Last show 5/20/15) / Colbert signed as h

At least when Johnny Carson retired, we still had Dave to look forward to. I've remained a loyal Dave viewer all these years. Certainly there were some periods where life circumstances kept me from watching every night, but I always found him funny. No, he's not as good as he was on NBC in the 1980s, (you can't be a revolutionary for 30 years!) but I still find him funnier than any of the so-called competitors. Looks like I'll finally be able to go to bed early.

I knew this day would come eventually, so for years I've been making my own "best-of" DVD-Rs. I only have a few VHS tapes from Carson's final weeks; I wasn't going to make the same mistake with Dave.

Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Letterman, you've earned it. Thanks for a lifetime of laughter!

Thank God Foo Fighters are playing tonight. I really needed that.

Going to be an extremely emotional hour, but going to pad because I think it could run a bit over and CBS won't care one bit.

I actually thought for a modern day Bob Dylan performance he was pretty good last night. At the end though when Dave went over to greet him it was kind of awkward. It seemed like he didn't even really acknowledge Dave at all and seemed zoned out or something. Murray was good as expected. I'm sort of surprised the final show is only an hour. I expected a two hour final show to go out on since its a big event. Damn I'm going to miss Dave.

Good to hear; I was beginning to wonder why they hadn't been on yet.

It wasn't as bad as Letterman and Vedder awkwardly attempting to hug - twice!

Tonight will be the first time I watch Letterman live in more than 10 years. I don't want to wait until tomorrow. It's going to be sad to see him go. While I haven't been a very loyal viewer in the last decade, he was my go-to late night guy from the time I discovered Late Night in 82 until well into my adulthood. There will never be another Letterman.

GOAT.

Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfield, Peyton Manning, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Alec Baldwin were at the taping.

Curious to see what type of involvement they'll have in the show.

I guess I didn't notice that. Eddie motioned for him to come over and they shook hands and did a little embrace. Dylan basically didn't acknowledge him at all and it was just sort of weird.

Spoiler:
They were part of a larger group who delivered the final top 10

Don't think it's much of a spoiler, but wanted to be safe.

I watched the 1 minute clip on youtube and found myself tearing up already.

I wonder if he was either stoned or just socially awkward. I agree it was unusual.

Wow. that is going to screw a lot of people who can't watch it live and don't know about this.

Thanks a bunch for this post.

Conan just talked about how Dave came on the Late Night program in 1994 and basically saved Conan's career. And, yes, he is going to tell people when to change the channel.

Dylan is definitely an oddball. What was funny with Eddie was Letterman went in for a second hug and Eddie turned toward Paul right at the moment and Letterman kind of held him from behind.

That was a pretty legendary top ten list, and Peyton Manning.

I got the impression from someone (Seinfeld?) that they were saying, unlike Carson, Letterman wouldn't retire for good and would be back with something.

But...hearing Letterman talk tonight I really believe he's retiring for good.

Damn new world placing him third after Fallen and Kimmel. I bet even if he was 2nd place he'd still be on the air.
