I'm mid-40s, so I grew up on Carson and Letterman...but Letterman was really "my guy."

Other than Conan, there's no one in late night now I find remotely funny. Still scratching my head over what people see in Jimmy Fallon - it must be a generational thing, because he doesn't make me laugh at all. Not to say he's not a nice guy, I just don't think he's very talented...at least not when it comes to hosting a show.
Agree. I don't think Fallon is entertaining in the least.

Gotcha. That makes sense. Fallon and Letterman have pretty dramatically different comedic styles.

That's why he ripped up the card at the beginning of each interview which had the typical pre-interview questions and didn't only plug whatever his guest's latest project was.
Craig also said that was why a lot of people wouldn't do his show, they only wanted to stay on message with what they agreed to talk about and had rehearsed.

I can believe that. I'm sure most of the typical Hollywood A-listers probably wouldn't have been used to Craig's style and wanted to just play safe. Plus I'm sure a lot of it was agents/studio representatives not wanting to have big stars go on a show without getting some promotion out of whatever the star is supposed to be on representing/promoting.

You, me and Peyton Manning.

I can sort of pretend he's on vacation this week, maybe even for two weeks, but this is really going to suck.

The forever nature of it hasn't hit me yet. I mean, I started watching during the tail end of middle school. Even on a Friday night in high school and in college, I'd record the show. There was very little in those clips that I didn't remember and some of the older stuff felt like it happened yesterday.

Clearly, Letterman's my preference, it's downright hilarious that anyone would state he's ULTRA liberal or has even used the show for much in the way of political opinions, but it seems some people these days see that in everything.

So, he's socially liberal and talked a bit about those things a bit more in the last decade. Big deal, but it was hardly a show that could have fit in on MSNBC or something. Also, he's 68, so please stop with the crap about him mailing it in or not being funny since the 1980's. He obviously changed when he went to the earlier time slot. He was expected to. It's a different responsibility and Ferguson, had he gotten the job, would have had to adapt some too.

Letterman was always funny and the show was still very clever at least through the 90's. But even a true Letterman fan has to admit he's not seemed to put the same kind of effort into the show for around 10-15 years now. I suppose having a kid and getting old will do that to you. He was still the best interviewer and the quickest wit doing a traditional talk show.

I'm going to try and get back into Conan during the summer and I'm praying Colbert doesn't try and pander to the Fallon crowd. I can't stand him even more than I couldn't stand Leno. But 33 years is a long time to watch something and then just have it go away. Every significant thing in my life happened during those years. The only significant things left are grandchildren, hopefully not for a long time, and dying.

I'm so in the bag for Colbert. He can read the phone book and I'll laugh.

Thanks. I don't get the Colbert appeal either. Now Conan, I get.

Yeah that promo isn't much to go off of really but I didn't find it that funny either. I'm only twenty-eight so either I'm just not hip enough to get him or something but I've never really understood his appeal and I don't know that him hosting the Late Show will change my mind.

I just brought it up because a couple others did. Plus Colbert is popular with people around my age group.

I always wondered how much Bernie Madoff got into Dave the way he talked about him. Very sad to think I've seen my last Top 10 and my last Will it Float?

Colbert will never appeal to the masses, as either you find him really funny or really unfunny. The Comedy Central Show was perfect for him because he appealed to a niche base of fans who bought into his type of humor or schtick, but he has to branch out to succeed to an 11:30PM fanbase on CBS.

I personally don't find the guy fun at all, but I have friends who love him.

Although, by having a defined band-leader, it seems like he might be sticking to the traditional "late night show" tropes, which I was hoping he's shake up. Although I can see him start out like that and then shake things up gradually down the line.

Once you knew it was there, did you have any trouble finding it?

No?

Then why would you need a link?

I'm confused. Is that his new band leader? The way he introduced the guy it seems like it was just more like someone he liked more than anything.

J Jay Leno on Life After The Tonight Show, Avoiding Letterman's Finale and Heading to CNBC Plus, what's wrong with late night now By Jason Lynch

One of the biggest questions counting down to David Letterman's farewell was whether you were going to show up at the end. What was behind your decision to stay away?
Well, I asked Dave to do a 10-second tape for us [when I left]. Anything, just, "Leno who?" They said no, they didn't want to do it. Well, why am I going to run all the way to New York? I mean, quid pro quo. I just said, "No, that's kind of silly."
