Well, they've hinted at it a few times. I don't think they wanted it to be a punch in the gut, but rather an "I knew it!" moment of revelation.
Did anyone else think it was weird to open the episode with a new version of the five of them meeting up the first time (complete with reveal of Robin being a Canuck a full year before it happened on the show) rather than the actual footage of how it happened in the pilot? It seemed stragely dishonest to me for a show that prides itself on hidden clues and accurate call-backs.

Did they say what the mother died from? If they did, I missed it. That seems to be a pretty important detail. She looked pretty healthy when they showed her in the hospital bed. We need answers!

They didn't mention how she died... just that she was sick. Usually it winds up being cancer - so that's my bet.

"Got sick" usually references the big C.
She died from Chlamydia.

Re: How I Met Your Mother - Series Finale - "Last Forever Part 1 & 2" - 3/31/14
Someone already mentioned it, but I really can't stand it now that I've slept on it.
All along I *hated*, passionately, absolutely, utterly, totally, completely hated the concept of wasting the *last* season, an entire season full of episodes, on one goddamn weekend for one goddamned wedding. This show had lost me a few years ago, but I started rewatching last season knowing the end, and mother, were near.
So they spent all ****Ing season on a wedding they utterly, totally, completely - whatever - destroyed, rendering null and void, the final episode? Knowing since the first season this was the end? What. The. F***? What were they on?
I can look past everything else. Every last thing. But spending the entire *final* season on Barney and Robin's wedding that you divorce and have Robin and Ted ultimately hook up the last hour?
So, like, why the hell couldn't we have gotten the final season to be the final episode? Ted courting the Mother? Then, with the setup being we expect to witness their wedding in the finale? We don't - we witness her death, and then... Ted and Robin. Why the **** couldn't they have done that, instead of wasting about ten hours of everyone's time?
Last night, I was neutral to somewhat positive on it. Now, after a night, nothing but hate for it.
Edited to add: One addendum - was anyone else really, really wishing - and expecting - that we'd see Saget as old Ted? I mean my God, we've spent nine years hearing his voice - then, the final episode, it's all Radnor - voice and appearance? It was really, really blatantly obvious they filmed Ted's scenes now and the kids in yesteryear - cut back and forth, camera a and camera b, and never the twain shall meet. That was distracting in itself.
But we've heard Saget tell the story all along, then the finale? It's suddenly Radnor's voice? Saget even looks like an older Ted. They certainly could have done it, and they sure as hell should have. Bleh. I think I just need to get this episode and show out of mind.

I mean, they pulled off telling stories of Ted and Tracy in snippets through out this season in future time without having to worry about taking away from HOW they met, having a lot more of those to show us their life together, and that they really did "grow old" together would have been nice.
Then again, not having Robin be in stasis for 16 years of pinning over the guy she probably should have married would have been a better way to portray women.

Who's to say that she didn't get sick, completely recover and end up having an affair and running off with her doctor?

Technically, I don't think they even said that she died. It was heavily implied, with her "getting sick" and Ted telling a story 6 years after some event.
Who's to say that she didn't get sick, completely recover and end up having an affair and running off with her doctor?

So trying to do quick math here, Ted is telling the story in 2030, and Tracy died in 2024, so they had 10 years together?

11, I think. This season's wedding took place last year since only a day went by, not a calendar year?

Meet in 2014, dead 6 years in 2030 = 10 years together.

The wedding was in May of 2013... 11 years together.

Rewatched the ending - which gave me an 80s movie ending vibe.
The song sounded like something out of the 80s (The Walkmen... 2012... ok) and showing the cast with real/character names - seen that a lot in the 80s. Not sure if that's the feeling they were going for, but it's the feeling I got.

How I Met Your Mother is certainly a better title than, How Your Mother Died of Cancer.

Yeah, the song was a re-recording of Downtown Train. A previous cover was a big Rod Stewart hit in the late '80s

I like the ending...after thinking about it for a bit.
He loved his wife very much, and was faithful to her in heart and soul.
But, it had been 5 years since she had died, time to move on.
All the characters had to grow and mature as people, and they all have.
-Barney is now a real man
-Robin did what she loved and got it out of her system, she is now ready to settle down.
-Supreme Fudge
-Ted loved "Until death do us part" and now he is free to love another (Robin, who is ready for love)
***They showed how people lives change and "Groups" can't stay exactly the same...and life changes us all***
I believe the "Mother" was truly loved, but once she passed, Ted and Robin are now in place to best friend that can be romantically involved.

I can see that...
The more I think of the finale, the madder I get. I think it was pretty awful. I kind of want to sell my dvds and forget I ever watched the show. I guess I will give it time to see if I can fanwank myself an ending and just forget this mess.
This review had some good points. Hope I can at least enjoy the early seasons...eventually.
